A new ready-to-drink tequila brand is entering one of the beverage industry's most congested shelves with a product formulation designed to stand apart: real tequila, not malt or wine base.

Azúcar Tequila launched this week with a three-SKU canned margarita line — Classic Lime, Spicy Lime and Passion Fruit — rolling out first into select retail accounts in Dallas and Austin. The brand is simultaneously building national reach through direct-to-consumer channels while it establishes Texas as its proving ground for brick-and-mortar distribution.

The Product Proposition

The RTD cocktail category has expanded sharply over the past four years, but the segment remains dominated by malt-based and wine-based formats that carry a margarita profile without tequila as the actual base spirit. Azúcar's positioning targets that gap directly: each can is formulated with 100% Blue Agave Blanco Tequila, real fruit juice and agave nectar. At 5.5% ABV and 180 calories per can, the product is also vegan and gluten-free — attributes that have become meaningful purchase signals among younger alcohol consumers.

Owner Adam Weitsman framed the ambition explicitly: "We didn't build Azúcar to be another brand in a crowded RTD aisle. We built it to be best in class, period." The RTD spirits segment has attracted dozens of entrants since 2021, with category volume growing faster than total beer and wine combined in off-premise channels, according to broad industry tracking — making differentiation on ingredient transparency an increasingly competitive lever.

The Cavinder Angle

Azúcar has appointed former collegiate basketball players and entrepreneurs Haley and Hanna Cavinder as Creative Directors, giving the brand a high-profile ambassador pairing with a combined social media following that spans sports, lifestyle and Gen Z culture. The Cavinder twins have previously built commercial relationships across multiple consumer categories since their college careers ended, and their role here extends beyond endorsement: the brand says they will shape creative strategy, content development and experiential marketing.

"We wanted to create something that felt true to how people actually drink," said Haley Cavinder. "There are so many options out there, but we saw an opportunity to bring innovation into the category while still keeping it easy, refreshing and fun." Hanna Cavinder added that the product was designed to fit naturally into the social occasions — sporting events, outdoor gatherings — that define the brand's target consumer occasions.

The influencer-as-creative-director model has gained traction across the beverage alcohol space as brands seek authentic connection to younger demographics rather than traditional celebrity licensing arrangements. For Azúcar, the positioning aligns with a broader trade strategy common among emerging spirits brands: establish credibility in a home market, generate DTC data on consumer behavior, then use that evidence base to negotiate expanded retail placement.

What's Next

Teitsman described Texas as "just the starting point," signaling national retail ambitions beyond the current Dallas and Austin footprint. The DTC channel will run concurrently, providing the brand with direct consumer data ahead of any broader retail expansion pitch.

For distributors and retail buyers evaluating the RTD spirits set, Azúcar's launch adds another tequila-based entrant to a shelf that has seen growing consumer preference for spirit-forward RTDs over their malt-based counterparts. Operators in the on-premise foodservice channel may also find relevance in the format as canned cocktails continue to penetrate stadium, venue and casual-dining accounts across Texas and beyond. The brand's gluten-free and vegan credentials further align with emerging consumer-trends in premium beverages.
