Leadership Shift
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii has promoted Tom Wylie from Chief Operating Officer to President, the Hawaiian-coffee franchise chain announced Monday, pairing the executive elevation with a headquarters relocation from Denver to Lexington, Kentucky and the opening of a dedicated East Coast distribution center.
Wylie is a co-owner of AWA Investments, the multi-unit, multi-brand franchisee group that is also the largest investor in Bad Ass Coffee's parent company, Royal Aloha Coffee Company. He brings more than 20 years of franchise operations experience — including prior leadership stints at Papa John's and Burn Boot Camp — and as COO oversaw real estate, site selection, construction, and new-store openings with a focus on unit-level economics. The appointment makes him the highest-ranking operator in a company that is explicitly building its growth model around existing franchisees rather than net-new franchisee recruitment.
Alongside Wylie's promotion, the brand reorganized several roles. Iain Douglas moves to Chief Strategy and Brand Officer, while the company added Stacy Nichols as Controller, Arden McLaughlin as Director of Communications and Franchise Engagement, Dave Dodson as Head of Local Store Marketing and Activation, Rachael Buckley as National Brand Manager, and Ed Yancey to lead Franchise Development.
Infrastructure Investment
The Lexington move is as much a logistics decision as an administrative one. The new distribution center is designed to improve supply-chain consistency for the brand's expanding East Coast footprint and its destination-market locations — a persistent operational challenge for a concept whose premium Hawaiian coffee sourcing adds complexity to procurement. The company is also completing a full back-office systems overhaul to give franchisees clearer visibility into unit-level performance data, a capability gap that multi-unit operators have flagged across the broader quick-service coffee segment.
"Everything we did in the first half of the year was about giving our owners a stronger business to build on," Wylie said. "As a franchisee myself, I know consistency in the supply chain and discipline in how we grow matter more than any single opening."
Growth Trajectory
Bad Ass Coffee has grown to 48 locations in 2026, with expansion driven primarily by its existing base of 10 multi-unit owners — four of whom are preparing to open a second unit. The brand projects 13 new store openings for the full year, which would bring the total to 55 locations by December 31, 2026. That internal reinvestment dynamic is a meaningful signal for the franchise sector: operators choosing to add units rather than exit typically reflect confidence in franchisee-level returns, a metric that struggling QSR and fast-casual brands have struggled to sustain in recent quarters.
The company's momentum has drawn external recognition. Bad Ass Coffee was named to the 2026 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies and earned an AdAge callout for its Give a Hoof cause campaign, which moved more than 60 bags of its limited-edition Viejo's Blend in a single week. The brand is also positioning its retail channel for broader distribution, with grocery, hospitality, and specialty retail availability described as forthcoming.
For foodservice and beverage industry operators tracking premium coffee franchise development, Bad Ass Coffee's infrastructure-first approach — prioritizing supply-chain discipline and franchisee economics over headline unit counts — reflects a maturation strategy that aligns with trends in specialty coffee franchising and multi-unit operator expansion documented across the sector this year.
