The Numbers
Brinker International (NYSE: EAT) reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 company sales of $1,461.2 million, up from $1,335.4 million a year earlier, as system-wide comparable restaurant sales rose 9.1%. Total revenues reached $1,475.6 million versus $1,349.2 million in the prior-year period. Net income climbed to $113.3 million, or $2.64 per diluted share, compared with $99.5 million, or $2.17 per diluted share, in Q1 fiscal 2026. On an adjusted basis, excluding special items, diluted EPS was $2.77 against $1.93 a year ago — a 43.5% increase. Adjusted EBITDA expanded to $209.1 million from $172.4 million.
Chili's drove the headline result, posting a 10.1% comparable-restaurant sales gain — lapping a 21.4% increase in the same quarter last year and a 14.0% comp from two years prior, producing a three-year cumulative stack of roughly 52%. Traffic contributed 6.4 percentage points to Chili's comp, with menu pricing accounting for 3.7 points. Franchise comparable sales for the domestic Chili's system rose 10.4%, and Chili's franchisees generated approximately $296.7 million in sales for the quarter, up from $269.5 million. Maggiano's Little Italy was a drag, with comparable sales falling 3.4% on lower traffic, partially offset by menu pricing.
Margin & Cash Performance
Chili's restaurant operating margin (non-GAAP) widened 140 basis points to 18.7% of company sales, reflecting sales leverage that more than offset pressure from commodity costs, hourly labor, advertising, and delivery-related expenses. Company restaurant expenses as a percentage of sales improved to 81.3% from 82.7% at the Chili's segment. At the consolidated level, restaurant operating margin reached 17.7%, up from 16.2%. Operating income rose to $151.0 million from $117.9 million, expanding the operating margin to 10.2% of total revenues from 8.7%.
Free cash flow (non-GAAP) nearly doubled to $105.7 million from $62.2 million, supported by $169.1 million in operating cash flow. The company deployed $125.0 million to repurchase common stock during the quarter and redeemed its outstanding $350.0 million 8.25% notes — funded through the revolving credit facility — incurring a $17.6 million loss on debt extinguishment that is excluded from the adjusted EPS figure. The quarter also included $27.1 million in payments for franchise restaurant acquisitions; Brinker brought 12 previously franchised Chili's domestic locations in-house, bringing total company-owned units to 1,174.
Guidance & Outlook
Management raised full-year fiscal 2027 guidance, lifting the total revenue range to $6.23–$6.33 billion from a prior range of $6.15–$6.27 billion. Adjusted diluted EPS guidance moved to $13.30–$13.90 from $12.60–$13.40. The company noted that a 53rd operating week in the fourth quarter is expected to contribute approximately 2.0 percentage points to total revenue growth and roughly $0.70 to adjusted diluted EPS. Capital expenditure guidance remains unchanged at $265.0–$285.0 million, with diluted weighted-average shares projected at 42.0–43.0 million.
Kevin Hochman, President and CEO of Brinker International, attributed the momentum to a combination of competitive value positioning, marketing effectiveness, and ongoing operational investment — factors he said continue to attract new guests and sustain visit frequency among regulars. The quarter's comps were further supported by the launch of the Big Crispy chicken sandwich at Chili's, which management cited as a meaningful traffic driver. For casual dining operators, Chili's sustained outperformance against the broader industry underscores the degree to which value-led strategies are reshaping guest traffic patterns — a trend covered extensively in our analysis of casual dining comp trends and relevant to foodservice operators tracking menu pricing and traffic dynamics.
