Functional hydration brand Caliwater used a high-footfall Los Angeles mall activation on October 19 to debut its Dragon Fruit flavor, distributing more than 5,000 samples at Westfield Century City in what the company framed as a preview of a broader upcoming campaign.
The Activation
The event drew thousands of consumers throughout the afternoon, anchored by a branded installation — an oversized bathtub serving as a pour station — along with street teams and roving beverage carts. Pop star Benson Boone, who co-developed the Dragon Fruit SKU and cited the product as part of his touring hydration routine, made a surprise appearance and personally distributed cans to attendees. Co-founder Vanessa Hudgens opened the event, while Demi Lovato, who previously collaborated with the brand on its Blood Orange flavor, made a closing appearance.
Celebrity Co-Creation Strategy
The launch reinforces Caliwater's deliberate approach to flavor development: recruit cultural figures with a documented, ongoing relationship with the product rather than conventional endorsement deals. Boone's Dragon Fruit and Lovato's Blood Orange are both positioned as authentic collaborations, a brand architecture that helps differentiate Caliwater in an increasingly crowded functional beverage segment. The strategy mirrors moves by larger players in the better-for-you hydration category, where celebrity equity has become a meaningful retail and social commerce lever.
Oliver Trevena, co-founder of Caliwater, framed the new SKU as a deliberate portfolio extension. "Dragon Fruit is bright, refreshing and really easy to drink, exactly the kind of flavor we want in the Caliwater lineup," he said. "We're excited to introduce it to fans and continue expanding the brand with flavors that deliver both function and great taste."
Product & Distribution Context
Dragon Fruit brings Caliwater's flavor count to six, joining Wild Prickly Pear, Watermelon, Blood Orange, Pineapple, and Ginger + Lime, plus kid-oriented pouches in select varieties. The base formula is built on sustainably sourced prickly pear cactus water, which the brand says requires up to 80.0% less water to cultivate than conventional crops — a supply-chain attribute increasingly valued by retail buyers focused on sustainability metrics. Each SKU contains five naturally occurring electrolytes, betalain antioxidants, and vitamins C and E, with no artificial sweeteners.
Caliwater, founded in 2021 by Hudgens and Trevena, has been expanding national retail distribution over the past two years, layering new flavors alongside distribution gains. The Westfield Century City activation signals that the brand is prepared to invest in experiential marketing as it competes for shelf space and consumer mindshare against established functional water labels. For operators and buyers tracking the better-for-you beverage category, Caliwater's celebrity co-creation pipeline and clean-label positioning make it a brand to monitor as distribution broadens heading into 2027.
