Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) is deploying a two-pronged promotional strategy timed to the back-to-school calendar: a single-day in-restaurant BOGO on Aug. 20 and three consecutive Sunday evening digital offers running Aug. 23 through Sept. 6, the chain confirmed Sunday.

The Promotions

The School Spirit BOGO runs Thursday, Aug. 20, from 3 p.m. to close at participating U.S. locations. Guests wearing any school apparel or accessories — from middle-school gear to college sweatshirts — may purchase one entrée and receive a second of equal or lesser value free, capped at five free entrées per check and valid only for in-restaurant orders. The offer cannot be stacked with other promotions or applied to delivery and catering channels.

Separately, the Chipotle Sundays promotion activates on Aug. 23, Aug. 30 and Sept. 6. Guests who place digital orders of two or more entrées after 3 p.m. local time on the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com — or Chipotle.ca for Canadian customers — receive one entrée free using promo code SUNDAYS. The digital-only structure is consistent with Chipotle's broader strategy of routing incremental traffic through owned channels, where ticket data and loyalty attribution are more readily captured.

Loyalty Integration

The promotions arrive alongside Chipotle U Rewards, a student loyalty tier introduced during last year's back-to-school cycle. Enrolled college students verified through ID.me receive 1,000 bonus points at sign-up and earn points at a rate 20% higher than the standard Chipotle Rewards baseline on every purchase. The tiered loyalty architecture mirrors approaches used across the quick-service sector to increase lifetime value among younger cohorts, who represent a disproportionate share of digital order volume.

Why It Matters

The timing is strategically significant for the broader quick-service restaurant sector. Late August through early September historically represents a soft patch for casual and fast-casual operators as summer daypart patterns shift. Chipotle, which operated more than 4,200 restaurants globally as of June 30, 2026, is using culturally resonant framing — the "Chipotle Sundays" ritual has accumulated organic traction on TikTok — to convert an existing consumer behavior into a structured promotional moment rather than manufacturing one from scratch.

"Back-to-school season is all about showing your school spirit and getting back into the routines that make the week feel a little easier," said Stephanie Perdue, Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing at Chipotle. "Whether you're repping your school or resetting with Chipotle on a Sunday, these offers are about meeting our guests in the moments that matter to them with real food and great value."

The Sunday digital offers also reflect the ongoing importance of app-driven loyalty programs in foodservice, where chains increasingly seek to reduce dependence on third-party delivery platforms. By requiring the SUNDAYS code through owned digital channels, Chipotle captures order-level data and reinforces habitual app usage among a demographic that will remain in its addressable market for years. For operators and Food & Beverage Magazine analysts tracking promotional ROI in the fast-casual segment, the dual-channel structure — in-restaurant BOGO for walk-in traffic, digital offer for app engagement — represents a deliberate effort to lift metrics on both fronts simultaneously.
