The Stunt
Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) is deploying a 170-liter, three-foot-wide replica of its signature takeout bag as the centrepiece of a national marketing campaign aimed at accelerating adoption of Family Meals, its digital-exclusive group-ordering format. The limited-edition "Big Ass Chipotle Bag" — measuring 36 inches wide, 24 inches tall and 12 inches deep — marks the chain's first major creative work with agency partner GUT and opens a multi-week sweepstakes for U.S. Rewards members running October 13 through November 10, 2026.
Family Meals, previously marketed under the name Build-Your-Own Chipotle, allow parties of four to six to customise bowls, tacos, salads and nachos from a shared selection of proteins, toppings and sides. At under $10 per person, the format is positioned as a value-oriented occasion driver for dinner gatherings and event viewing. Orders are available exclusively through the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com, with pickup windows as short as 10 minutes — a logistics detail that underscores the chain's continued investment in digital throughput.
The Business Case
Group-occasion revenue is an increasingly contested battleground across the fast-casual segment, with operators from Cava to Sweetgreen expanding catering and bulk-order capabilities to capture higher average checks from a single transaction. For Chipotle, which operates more than 4,200 locations across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Middle East, Family Meals represent a lever to lift digital order frequency and basket size without adding menu complexity or kitchen load. Stephanie Perdue, Senior Vice President, Brand Marketing at Chipotle, described group occasions as "a growing part of our business," signalling that the format is being tracked at a strategic level rather than treated as a peripheral add-on.
The sweepstakes mechanic is also noteworthy from a loyalty-programme standpoint. Entry is automatic for Rewards members who purchase a Family Meal through the app or Chipotle.com during the promotion window — effectively tying prize eligibility to a specific, higher-value SKU and nudging existing loyalty users toward a transaction type they may not have tried. With tens of millions of Rewards members on its rolls, Chipotle has used similar mechanics in the past to drive digital channel mix and incremental check growth.
Creative Approach
The GUT campaign gives the bag a deliberate high-fashion treatment, placing it alongside incongruous objects — a trumpet, a Christmas tree, a branded Chipotle chair — to amplify its scale through contrast. Ricky Casal, Chief Creative Officer at GUT Miami, said the concept required minimal explanation: "You see this ridiculously oversized Chipotle bag and immediately get the joke." The approach trades on the chain's existing brand equity in packaging; the brown bag with its blocky typeface has become one of the more recognisable containers in fast-casual foodservice.
For trade observers, the activation also illustrates a broader industry pattern: limited-edition physical collectibles, when paired with a digital entry mechanic, generate earned media at a fraction of the cost of paid placements while simultaneously funnelling consumers into owned digital channels. Chipotle has previously used similar sweepstake-driven product stunts — from lid-less lids to branded merchandise — to generate outsized social engagement, a playbook now being extended to spotlight a specific menu format rather than a single item. Operators tracking fast-casual digital marketing trends will note the dual function: brand spectacle and loyalty data acquisition in a single activation.
