Conagra Brands (NYSE: CAG) has launched Banquet MEGA Crispy Chicken Tenders, entering a frozen chicken tenders and strips category that generated $1.8 billion in annual retail sales through late July 2026. The product ships in a 22-oz. bag containing approximately 11 tenders, priced at a suggested retail of $7.49, and is available in Original and Spicy varieties.

The Category Numbers

The frozen chicken tender segment has posted a three-year compound annual dollar growth rate of 3.0%, with 62.3% of U.S. households purchasing frozen prepared chicken at least once per year, according to Circana panel data through July 2026. At the foodservice level, tenders appear on 27.0% of U.S. restaurant menus, while consumer spending at chicken-focused quick-service restaurants reached $56.5 billion in the 12 months ending June 2026 — a 5.0% increase over the prior-year period, per Circana CREST data.

The demand signals underpinning the launch are broad-based. Circana's National Eating Trends data show 48.0% of all U.S. consumers are actively seeking more protein in their diets, up 6.8 percentage points versus a year ago. Among Gen Z adults specifically, half report trying to increase protein consumption, a figure that is up 14.0% year-over-year. Gen Z accounts for 23.0% of eating occasions classified as "Heat & Eat," a behavioral pattern that aligns directly with the frozen prepared chicken segment's growth trajectory.

Competitive Positioning

"Chicken tenders provide so much of what Americans seek in a meal," said Ayesha Narula, Vice President and General Manager at Conagra Brands. "Convenient protein, easy prep, and delicious taste are among the many reasons consumers enjoy chicken tenders." Each serving delivers 16 grams of protein, a specification Conagra is using to anchor the product within the broader high-protein frozen foods conversation — a positioning increasingly prevalent across the retail freezer aisle.

The launch also reflects structural shifts in U.S. protein consumption. Chicken overtook beef as the most widely available protein in 2010 and average per-capita consumption first exceeded 100 pounds in 2024. The National Chicken Council projects that figure will reach 106.8 pounds per American by 2027. At-home preparation trends favor oven cooking at 38.0% of occasions, with air fryers close behind at 37.0% — a split that informed Banquet's positioning of the product as air-fryer ready.

Retail and Operator Implications

For grocery retailers, the Banquet entry represents an established value-brand challenger in a segment that has attracted significant shelf activity from both national and private-label competitors. The $7.49 price point for a 22-oz. bag positions the SKU below many premium frozen tender offerings while carrying Conagra's distribution scale across major retail channels. Retailers tracking frozen food category performance will note that the 3.0% CAGR in tenders outpaces several adjacent frozen protein segments.

For food and beverage operators and analysts monitoring Conagra's brand portfolio strategy, the Banquet expansion into a higher-volume format signals continued investment in the company's value-tier frozen labels despite broader portfolio rationalization efforts. Conagra reported fiscal 2026 net sales of over $11 billion across brands including Birds Eye, Healthy Choice, and Marie Callender's.
