Natural cork closures generated $7.74 billion — 62.3% of total U.S. off-premise wine dollar sales — in the 52-week period ending July 2026, according to NielsenIQ data commissioned by the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR) and the Natural Cork Council (NCC). The findings, drawn from the $12.42 billion total domestic market, show cork-sealed formats also moved 56.32 million cases, nearly half of all off-premise volume.

The Numbers

Within the 750ml glass bottle segment at $8.00 and above — the core premium tier — cork's share climbs further: 73.8% of bottle revenue ($7.20 billion) and 70.8% of case volumes. Per-case realization for cork-sealed wines averaged $137.37 across all tiers, a 27.3% premium over screwcap-sealed bottles at $107.92 per case and a 207.7% premium over alternative closures averaging $44.63 per case. At the luxury end ($25.00+), cork captured 95% of total domestic revenue; in the Ultra Premium tier ($15.00–$24.99), its share stood at 54%.

Among the Top 100 U.S. wine brands by sales volume, the closure's dominance intensifies: cork-sealed 750ml bottles accounted for 8 of the top 10 SKUs ranked by revenue growth and 9 of the top 10 by volume growth during the period. In the Luxury tier within that cohort, cork commanded 97% of revenue — a figure that underscores the closure's role as the default signal of premium positioning for both producers and retail buyers.

White Wine Gains

While red wine remains cork's stronghold — 89% of all red wine SKUs priced at $8.00 or above are sealed with cork — the closure is widening its footprint in white wine categories. Cork-sealed bottles accounted for 49% of active white wine SKUs and $3.15 billion, or 44% of total white wine revenue, within the Top 100 brands segment. Chardonnay drove more than half of all white wine sales at $1.60 billion, with cork capturing 59.9% revenue share ($961 million) in the variety. Sauvignon Blanc also showed notable dynamics: cork-sealed bottles in that category averaged $130.51 per case, a 34.5% premium over white wine category averages and a 14.3% premium over screwcap-sealed Sauvignon Blanc ($144.17 versus $126.13 per case).

Resilience in a Down Market

The data arrives against a backdrop of well-documented pressure on U.S. wine volumes, where macroeconomic headwinds and shifting consumer demographics have weighed on category performance. The NielsenIQ figures suggest closure type correlates with revenue stability: non-glass and synthetic alternative closures posted a -28.0% year-over-year revenue contraction in the Popular Premium tier ($8.00–$11.99), while cork-sealed luxury wines declined just -2.0% year-over-year in the same period. APCOR's parallel research in the UK found cork-sealed wines commanded an 18.2% price premium at retail and a 74.5% premium in on-premise dining. A separate French study covering the top 120 AOP and IGP still wines priced between €8 and €20 showed cork sealing 86% of references and capturing 86% of total sales value, with price premiums over alternatives ranging from 15% to 26% and widening at higher price points.

"Natural cork isn't just for special occasion bottles," said Patrick Spencer, Executive Director of the Natural Cork Council. "Capturing over 62% of domestic off-premise dollar sales and driving 8 out of the top 10 revenue-growth wines in the country, cork provides everyday shoppers with an immediate signal of quality and sustainability."

For beverage alcohol suppliers and on-premise operators weighing packaging decisions, the data reinforces a clear commercial argument: at every tier above $8.00, the market currently prices cork as a value-add — not merely a convention.
