The Return

Dave's Killer Bread, the Flowers Foods (NYSE: FLO) organic bread unit and the No. 1 organic bread brand in the U.S., is returning its Pumpkin Spice Madness Bagels to grocery shelves nationwide — the first time the SKU has appeared in seven years. The limited-edition product carries a $6.49 retail price for a five-count pack and will remain on shelf through November, or while supplies last.

Product & Positioning

The seasonal bagel is formulated with organic, Non-GMO Project Verified whole grains, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, delivering 10 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving. The nutritional profile is central to DKB's trade argument: proprietary consumer research the brand commissioned found that 54% of respondents prioritize flavor over nutrition when choosing a bagel, versus 34% who lead with health considerations — a gap the company says its organic-but-indulgent positioning is designed to close.

The same survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, fielded online in late March 2026, found that one in three consumers rank bagels among their top breakfast foods, placing the category ahead of oatmeal (29%), muffins (29%), and crepes (14%). Notably, 63% of respondents said they eat bagels year-round rather than seasonally — a consumer behavior that cuts against the limited-edition scarcity strategy DKB is deploying, but which the brand frames as an opportunity to drive incremental trial through novelty.

"BreadHeads have been clamoring for the return of this iconic, organic favorite," said Cristina Watson, Senior Director of Brand Management for Dave's Killer Bread. "It's Pumpkin Spice season, but with a DKB twist: 10 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and all the fall flavor you want."

Broader Bagel Push

The Pumpkin Spice relaunch is part of a broader acceleration in DKB's bagel segment. The brand also recently extended its bagel lineup with Mini Bagels in two permanent flavors — Plain Awesome and Epic Everything — at 100 calories per unit, targeting snacking and lunchbox occasions alongside the breakfast daypart. Together, the moves suggest Flowers Foods is leaning on DKB's organic equity to compete more aggressively in the packaged bagel aisle, a category historically dominated by Thomas' and private label.

For foodservice and grocery buyers, the seasonal return also tests how much velocity a seven-year gap can generate on a legacy SKU. Limited-time offerings in the packaged bread and bakery segment have grown as a shelf-reset and earned-media tactic since specialty bread demand surged post-pandemic. DKB's organic certification and second-chance employment mission — one in three workers at its Oregon bakery carries a criminal background — have historically driven outsized brand loyalty that supports premium price points above conventional competitors.

With fall seasonal items commanding growing retail real estate across grocery channels, DKB's timing aligns with broader pumpkin-flavored product expansion across the food and beverage sector, where limited-run SKUs increasingly serve as traffic drivers for the broader brand portfolio rather than standalone revenue centers.
