EQ Bank (TSX: EQB) is deploying a loyalty-marketing campaign inside Loblaw's grocery and pharmacy network this month, anchored by a 25-million PC Optimum point sweepstakes and a series of in-store pop-up activations spanning Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary — the company's most visible consumer push since assuming exclusive financial-services rights to the PC Optimum program.
The Contest Mechanics
The Grand Scan Contest runs 13 days, from Aug. 13 to Aug. 26, and is open to PC Optimum members who spend $20 or more at a participating Loblaw-affiliated grocery banner or Shoppers Drug Mart and scan their PC Optimum card or app at checkout. One winner receives the entire 25-million-point prize — a record single-winner allocation for the program. The contest is administered by Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest food retailer, which operates more than 1,100 grocery stores and nearly 1,400 Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix pharmacy locations.
In-Store Footprint
EQ Bank is running pavilion-style pop-ups at three Loblaw-owned supermarket locations on a rotating schedule: a Loblaws banner store on Toronto's Leslie Street from Aug. 13 to 16; a Real Canadian Superstore in Vancouver's Grandview corridor from Aug. 20 to 23; and a Real Canadian Superstore at Calgary's Signal Hill centre from Aug. 27 to 30. Attendees can participate in a Spin-to-Win activation for incremental PC Optimum points and receive information on EQ Bank's broader retail banking lineup, which now includes the PC Money Account and PC Mastercard under the PC Financial brand absorbed into the EQB Inc. group.
Why Grocery Floors Matter
For a digital-first challenger bank, physical grocery placement is a meaningful distribution lever. The PC Optimum program counts more than 18 million members — a reach that rivals the combined active user bases of several major Canadian financial apps. EQB Inc. reported approximately $150 billion in combined assets under management and administration as of its most recent disclosures, making it the parent of Equitable Bank, Canada's seventh-largest Schedule I bank by assets. Embedding financial-product discovery inside routine grocery shopping trips lowers customer acquisition cost and taps shopping-motivated attention at the point of transaction — a tactic that resonates particularly in the current high-cost-of-living environment, where loyalty point accumulation has gained renewed consumer salience across the foodservice and grocery sectors.
"We believe that banking should happen where life happens," said Daniel Rethazy, Executive Vice President of Personal Banking at EQ Bank. "As we begin this new chapter with PC Financial, this is the first step in how we're creating even more opportunities for Canadians to make every dollar go further."
The campaign sits at the intersection of two trends reshaping Canadian grocery economics: the consolidation of loyalty currency around dominant retail programs, and the migration of financial-product marketing into physical retail environments. Loblaw's loyalty ecosystem already drives roughly one billion customer transactions annually across its banners — a volume that gives EQ Bank unrivalled transactional data and marketing surface area relative to pure-play digital competitors. For grocery operators and foodservice suppliers tracking consumer spending patterns, the partnership signals that loyalty programs are evolving from discount mechanisms into embedded financial-services platforms. Retailers seeking analogues in the U.S. or European markets may find useful framing in recent retail media and loyalty strategy coverage examining how grocery anchors are monetising member data through financial co-ventures.
