The Refresh
Novus Foods, the Cincinnati-based consumer packaged goods company behind noosa yoghurt, La Mexicana, and Señor Rico, is executing a full brand overhaul of its Fresh Cravings refrigerated dips line — new visual identity, reformulated hummus, and a repositioned brand narrative targeting flavor-forward grocery shoppers. Refreshed product will hit shelves at Ahold Delhaize, Albertsons, Kroger, Publix, and Walmart this fall.
Formula and Packaging Changes
The most substantive operational change is a hummus reformulation that removes sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate — synthetic preservatives common in refrigerated dips — while increasing tahini content to deliver a creamier texture. The move aligns Fresh Cravings with a broader category trend: clean-label hummus has been one of the faster-growing segments within the refrigerated perimeter, as shoppers scrutinise ingredient lists more closely post-pandemic. The new packaging adopts a "Zingy Green" colorway across the portfolio, designed to differentiate Fresh Cravings on a shelf crowded with established private-label and branded competitors including Sabra and Hope Foods.
The line already carries unconventional SKUs — Honey Jalapeño Hummus, Pineapple Jalapeño Dip, and multi-layer formats — that give the brand a flavour-innovation story beyond commodity hummus. Admir Basic, CEO of Novus Foods, framed the relaunch as an expansion of the brand's existing equity rather than a departure: "We're staying true to what people already love about Fresh Cravings while giving them even more reasons to discover something new."
Retail and Market Context
The simultaneous rollout across five major retail banners signals meaningful distribution scale. Kroger, Walmart, and Albertsons together represent a significant share of U.S. grocery volume, and securing refresh placement across all three at once limits the window competitors have to counter-programme on shelf. Matt Paolucci, Vice President of Commercial Strategy at Novus Foods, pointed to evolving consumer expectations as the strategic rationale: "They're looking for food that goes beyond the basics and gives them more variety, quality and inspiration at home."
The refrigerated dips and spreads category has attracted sustained investment over the past several years as consumers shift snacking occasions toward protein-adjacent formats. Hummus remains the category anchor, but brands that have layered in global flavour profiles and clean-label credentials have generally outperformed plain-variety lines in velocity data reported by retailers. Novus's reformulation — removing preservatives while sharpening the flavour profile — addresses both vectors simultaneously.
For retailers, the relaunch offers a category-management argument: a differentiated, visually distinct SKU set that can sit alongside private-label hummus without directly cannibalising it. The "Zingy Green" branding is explicitly designed for shelf standout, a consideration that carries weight with category buyers evaluating whether a brand refresh justifies prime real estate. Operators tracking the refrigerated perimeter for private-label versus branded dynamics will want to watch Fresh Cravings' velocity figures after the fall reset. Novus Foods has not disclosed volume targets or revenue projections for the relaunch, but the breadth of the retail footprint suggests the company is treating this as a national-scale bet on the clean-label dips opportunity. Additional context on clean-label reformulation across the broader snack and dip segment reflects a category-wide shift that Fresh Cravings is now formally joining.
