Two New SKUs
Girl Scouts of the USA is expanding its annual cookie program into two previously untapped consumer segments, unveiling Patch Pals — a soft-baked dog treat developed with BARK (NYSE: BARK) — and Girl Scout Sparkables, a crunchy oatmeal-chocolate-chip cookie developed with Partake that is free of the nine major food allergens. Both products will launch exclusively online with direct-to-consumer shipping beginning January 12, 2027, the national kickoff date for the 2027 Girl Scout Cookie season.
The additions mark the first time GSUSA has extended its iconic cookie program beyond human consumers and the first time it has introduced a product purpose-built for families navigating food allergies. Patch Pals are blueberry muffin-flavored and baked in four "patch" designs referencing iconic Girl Scout activities. Girl Scout Sparkables are produced in a facility specifically designed to avoid cross-contact with the top nine allergens — wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs, soy, fish, sesame, and shellfish — and carry non-GMO and vegan certifications.
Partnership Strategy
The choice of co-development partners signals deliberate positioning in two high-growth CPG segments. BARK, which operates BarkBox and Super Chewer subscription services and distributes through Target, Chewy, and Amazon, brings category-specific product development infrastructure to the dog-treat collaboration. Partake, a Certified B Corp founded in 2016 and present in more than 11,000 U.S. retail locations, has built its brand around the allergen-free cookie segment — a market that food manufacturers and retailers have invested in heavily as allergy prevalence and consumer awareness continue to rise. By licensing its brand to established specialists rather than attempting to formulate in-house, GSUSA avoids the regulatory and manufacturing complexity of allergen-controlled production while extending the reach of a program that generates revenue for local councils and troops.
Both new products will be sold exclusively via the online channel for shipping, a departure from the traditional booth-and-order-form model that defines the cookie program. The online-only structure insulates physical cookie booth operations from inventory and logistics complexity while letting GSUSA test demand signals for niche-format products before any broader distribution decisions.
Market Context
The U.S. pet food and treat market has grown into a multibillion-dollar category, with premium and humanized treats among its fastest-expanding subcategories. Simultaneously, the free-from and allergen-friendly segment within packaged cookies and snacks has attracted sustained investment from both legacy manufacturers and emerging brands. GSUSA's decision to address both in a single season announcement reflects an awareness that the cookie program's traditional January-to-April sales window must compete alongside year-round DTC snack subscription services and an increasingly fragmented snack aisle.
The 2027 season will otherwise retain familiar titles including Thin Mints, Samoas/Caramel deLites, and Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs. Program proceeds continue to be retained locally by Girl Scout councils and troops, funding activities from outdoor programming to STEM initiatives. As reported by Food & Beverage Magazine, brand licensing partnerships have become an increasingly productive tool for nonprofit organizations seeking to extend consumer relevance without direct capital expenditure.
For F&B operators and retailers monitoring the allergen-friendly space, the Sparkables launch offers a data point on how co-manufacturing with a vertically specialized partner — rather than retrofitting a conventional production line — can accelerate time-to-market for free-from products. Coverage of related allergen-free product trends and pet food category dynamics has tracked similar co-branding structures gaining traction across the broader snack sector.
