Instacart (NASDAQ: CART) launched Clementine, its AI-powered grocery shopping assistant, to most customers across the United States and Canada on September 9, drawing on a data foundation of more than 1.6 billion lifetime orders and a catalog exceeding 2 billion items. The rollout positions the grocery-technology platform as an end-to-end meal-planning utility rather than a pure delivery intermediary.
The Numbers
Clementine's intelligence layer is fed by more than 10 million daily inventory signals from nearly 100,000 stores across more than 2,200 retail banners in North America — figures current as of December 31, 2025. Early internal data show that orders placed through Clementine carry larger baskets than Instacart's existing industry-wide average of $115, with customers migrating from simple restock tasks toward recipe-driven shopping as familiarity with the assistant grows.
Consumer demand is legible in survey data: a Harris Poll conducted online June 2–4, 2026, among 2,059 U.S. adults found that more than 80% of Americans report stress around the nightly dinner decision, and more than three in five expressed interest in an AI assistant to manage it.
What the Product Does
Clementine accepts plain-language prompts — "high-protein easy dinners for two" or "everything for a football watch party for 20 people" — and assembles a ready-to-buy cart in seconds, filtered against live in-store inventory at the shopper's selected retailer. A preference center allows households to set dietary parameters — gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, organic — that persist across sessions. The assistant also surfaces deals, suggests lower-cost substitutes, and can reconstruct a prior order from a "shop my usuals" command. Grocery-list upload via photo or screenshot is supported.
"We've spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work," said Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart. "It learns from the preferences you share and the way you've shopped on Instacart. It can help you stay on budget and surface what's actually in stock at your chosen store, handling enough of the weekly planning that the mental load actually feels lighter."
Enterprise Reach
Beyond its consumer-facing app, Instacart is pushing the same underlying intelligence into retailer storefronts through Cart Assistant, a white-label product that allows grocers to deploy a branded agentic shopping experience on their own websites and apps. Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group, and Woodman's are currently live; ALDI U.S., Harmon's, The Save Mart Companies, and Stew Leonard's are in the pipeline. The enterprise offering combines Instacart's inventory intelligence with each retailer's proprietary catalog and customer data, and can be customized for tone, loyalty program integration, and recipe content.
For mid-market and regional grocers facing margin pressure from larger digital-native competitors, Cart Assistant represents a route to AI-powered personalization without building the underlying infrastructure independently — a dynamic that mirrors broader platform consolidation trends in grocery e-commerce.
Instacart has also secured integrations with Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Google's Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search, enabling grocery conversations that originate in those environments to route directly to an Instacart checkout. The multi-platform strategy extends Instacart's potential order surface well beyond its own app and mirrors the kind of distribution-layer thinking increasingly common across food retail technology partnerships.
Clementine is accessible via the Instacart app and website; Cart Assistant details are available through Instacart's enterprise platform.
