Jif, the peanut butter brand owned by The J.M. Smucker Co., is rolling out its first significant visual overhaul in more than 30 years, a packaging and identity update designed to reposition the brand around snacking occasions well beyond the traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich. New packaging begins shipping to retail in October 2026, with shelf transitions continuing through fall and into early winter.
The Design Changes
The refreshed identity retains Jif's signature tri-color banner but strips away the drop shadow that has appeared on the logo for decades, producing what the brand describes as a cleaner, bolder presentation suited to both physical shelf sets and e-commerce thumbnails. Updated imagery across the packaging surface highlights usage occasions — apple slices, rice cakes, crackers — that extend the brand's relevance to snack-forward consumers. Circana point-of-sale data for the 52 weeks ending March 2, 2026 ranks Jif as the top-selling peanut butter brand in the United States.
Portfolio and Naming Shifts
The visual refresh is paired with a product-naming change: Jif To Go, the brand's portable single-serve cups, will be relabeled Jif Dippers to more explicitly communicate the dipping occasion. Smucker's has also introduced squeezable formats alongside newer SKUs — Jif Peanut Butter & Chocolate Flavored Spread and Jif Simply™ Peanut Butter Spread — that collectively widen the portfolio's footprint across snacking dayparts. No formulation changes are planned; the company confirmed the core taste profile remains unchanged.
Retail and Competitive Context
The timing reflects broader pressure on legacy center-store brands to modernize both their look and their occasion framing as consumers allocate more snacking spend toward portable, convenient formats. The U.S. peanut butter category has historically been concentrated — Jif and a small number of private-label and natural-segment competitors account for the bulk of dollar sales — making shelf visibility and brand recall at retail critical levers for maintaining category leadership. A refresh that sharpens on-shelf legibility while broadening the occasion messaging could support Smucker's goal of defending unit velocity against private-label alternatives, which have gained ground across multiple center-store categories since 2022.
"We wanted to honor the iconic elements people know and love while bringing new energy to the shelf," said Shelly Kowal, Marketing Director at The J.M. Smucker Co. "Jif has evolved from being one of the key ingredients in a PB&J to also serving as a delicious complement to so many snacking occasions, and this new branding celebrates that."
For food retailers and category managers, the October ship date sets a roughly 10-week window to plan planogram updates ahead of the holiday shelf reset cycle. Operators and buyers tracking the broader snacking and spreads segment may also want to note the Dippers rename as a signal of where Smucker's intends to compete for incremental impulse volume.
