The Move

Grupo Jumex, the Mexican beverage company behind the ubiquitous fruit nectar portfolio, has launched Jumex Protein Shake™, a ready-to-drink protein beverage delivering 30 grams of protein per 12-fluid-ounce bottle. The product is now stocked in 2,942 Walmart stores across the United States and on Walmart.com, giving the brand immediate national distribution without a phased regional rollout.

The Lineup

The line launches in three flavors — Mango, Churro Chocolate, and Vanilla Flan — each drawing on Mexican culinary heritage to differentiate from the largely vanilla-and-chocolate RTD protein market dominated by established sports-nutrition players. The flavor strategy mirrors a broader play to position Jumex against category incumbents on taste rather than competing directly on protein content or price. The 30-gram protein count per bottle is competitive with mainstream RTD offerings from brands such as Premier Protein and Fairlife, which anchor the high-velocity segment at mass retail.

Why It Matters

The RTD protein shake category has expanded well beyond gym-goers into everyday convenience occasions, driven by consumer demand for functional, on-the-go nutrition. Mass-channel velocity in the segment has attracted juice, dairy, and snack brands looking to diversify away from slower-growing traditional beverage aisles. For Jumex, a company founded in 1961 and historically concentrated in fruit nectars and juices, the launch represents a structural pivot toward higher-margin lifestyle nutrition — a category where brand equity around flavor can serve as a genuine point of difference.

Salvi Folch, Chief Executive Officer of Grupo Jumex, described the launch as "an important milestone in the evolution of our company and our brand," adding that the product enters "a large and growing category at national scale." Carlos Madrazo, Country Manager for Jumex USA, framed the competitive rationale more directly: "Protein has become part of everyday life for many consumers, but the category can still feel too predictable." The flavor differentiation argument will be tested at shelf against a Walmart assortment that already carries well-established low-cost and premium RTD protein options.

The Walmart exclusive launch also signals Jumex's channel priorities in the U.S. market. Walmart commands a dominant share of mass-market beverage sales, and securing nearly 3,000 doors on entry eliminates the slow-build distribution challenge that derails many better-for-you beverage launches. Whether the brand extends to club, drug, or grocery channels will be a key indicator of early sell-through performance. Industry observers tracking functional beverage trends note that Walmart's RTD protein set has become increasingly competitive, with retailers culling slow movers on a quarterly reset cycle.

Jumex has not disclosed suggested retail pricing, unit volume targets, or first-year revenue projections for the new line. The company's U.S. operation has been expanding its footprint through new product development and category innovation, a strategy that will be further tested as it competes for consumer attention in a crowded sports and performance nutrition segment.
