Taiwanese single malt producer Kavalan has released a two-expression Mizunara Oak Single Cask Strength collection developed in collaboration with Japanese contemporary artist Takahide Komatsu, whose original butterfly paintings feature on each bottle. The release, announced 13 August, represents one of the more technically demanding segments of the super-premium whisky market, given the scarcity of Mizunara cooperage globally.
The Expressions
The collection comprises a standard unpeated single malt and a peated malt variant, both bottled at single cask strength in 700ml format. The unpeated expression leads on vanilla, fresh coconut and sandalwood on the nose, with creamy toffee and dark chocolate on the palate and a citrus-peel finish. The peated version integrates gentle smoke with oriental oak, sandalwood and dried longan aromas, resolving to peach, propolis and a sweet, lingering finish — a profile shaped by the interplay of peat character with Mizunara's incense-driven qualities. Both carry the deep amber colouring characteristic of high-intensity subtropical maturation.
Mizunara oak — sourced from the cool forests of northern Japan — requires more than a century of growth before trees reach coopering maturity, and the wood's porous grain structure makes cask construction unusually difficult. Those supply-side constraints keep global Mizunara inventory tight and justify the premium positioning that distilleries including Kavalan, Suntory and independent bottlers have pursued in recent years. Kavalan's warm, humid climate in Yilan County, Taiwan, accelerates extraction from the oak, producing the sandalwood and incense notes associated with the wood alongside the distillery's signature tropical-fruit and cream profile.
Collector's Editions
In Taiwan, the collection is offered in two retail configurations: a Classic Single Bottle Edition and a Hand-painted Collector's Double Set featuring labels individually hand-painted and signed by Komatsu. Each label depicts twelve butterfly species native to Taiwan, a choice that frames the release as a cross-cultural biodiversity statement as much as a product launch. Komatsu, born in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, works in a style that blends the Rinpa painting tradition with contemporary techniques; his work has been exhibited at United Nations biodiversity forums.
YT Lee, Chairman of King Car Group — Kavalan's parent company, which has operated in the beverage sector for more than 45 years — described Mizunara maturation as among the most demanding disciplines in whisky production, noting that Taiwan's subtropical ageing conditions create a character distinct from Japanese or Scottish Mizunara releases. That differentiation argument is central to the positioning of Taiwanese whisky in the global premium spirits market, where Kavalan has accumulated more than 1,000 gold-level or higher awards from international competition circuits since the distillery opened in 2005.
Distribution
The Mizunara Oak Single Cask Strength collection is available through Kavalan's domestic Taiwan channels, including the Kavalan Distillery Shop in Yilan County, Kavalan Whisky Shops, the Kavalan Whisky Bar, and select licensed liquor retailers. No export availability or pricing was disclosed in the announcement. For trade buyers and importers tracking limited-release whisky allocations, the Taiwan-only footprint at launch is consistent with Kavalan's pattern of phased geographic rollouts for its rarest single cask expressions.
