The Strategy
Kewpie Americas is staging a seven-week experiential marketing push across Southern California beginning October 17, betting that in-person sampling can accelerate the shelf velocity gains the Japanese condiment brand has accumulated in U.S. retail over the past several years. Dubbed the "I Love KEWPIE" Tour, the campaign runs a branded red food truck through a circuit of high-traffic consumer events, culminating December 4 at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif.
The tour's confirmed stops span the OC Japan Fair in Costa Mesa, Smorgasburg LA (two Sundays), Santa Monica Pier, and select undisclosed retail locations, with additional venues to be announced. At each stop, the brand will distribute free bites — including egg salad sandos and smash burger sliders — alongside limited-edition branded merchandise ranging from apparel to collectible pins. A sweepstakes offering a grand-prize trip to Japan anchors the consumer engagement mechanics.
Brand Equity Play
For Kewpie, the tour is as much a brand-history activation as it is a sampling exercise. The mascot printed on every bottle traces to a 1909 illustration by American artist Rose O'Neill, originally published in Ladies' Home Journal. Toichiro Nakashima, who founded Kewpie in Japan in 1919 and launched the mayonnaise in 1925, licensed the character — a detail the brand is positioning as the mascot's "return" to its U.S. origins. That narrative gives Kewpie a differentiated story in a U.S. condiment category dominated by Hellmann's and Duke's.
Jeremy Stoddard, Assistant General Manager of Marketing at Kewpie Americas, framed the effort as community reciprocity. "Our mascot was born right here in America, so seeing KEWPIE become a staple means a great deal to us," he said. "Sharing that story in person, one bite at a time, feels like the most natural way to say thank you." YouTube personality Sam Zien, known as "Sam the Cooking Guy," is confirmed to cook live at select stops including Smorgasburg LA, extending the campaign's reach into digital foodservice content channels.
Market Context
The activation reflects a broader industry pattern of Japanese and Asian-origin condiment brands investing in experiential channels to convert social-media followings into repeat purchasers at retail. Kewpie's egg-yolk-only formulation — which produces a richer, more umami-forward profile than whole-egg Western mayonnaises — has found particular traction in foodservice, where chefs have used it as a back-of-house staple for years before the brand gained mainstream grocery distribution. Consumer interest in Japanese condiments, from yuzu kosho to Kewpie itself, has been a consistent driver of the specialty and international foods category across both natural and conventional grocery channels.
For retail buyers and foodservice distributors, the Southern California concentration of the tour is deliberate: the region represents one of the densest clusters of Japanese American communities in the country as well as a highly trend-sensitive grocery market where premium condiment turns tend to outpace national averages. A strong performance here typically informs distributor conversations for broader national expansion.
The iHeartRadio Jingle Ball integration — where Kewpie will operate a "Red Room" in the pre-show village, place the mascot on the red carpet, and serve mayo-forward dishes to VIP guests — gives the brand an entertainment-marketing footprint that skews toward a younger, social-first consumer cohort.
