Kinepolis Group, the Belgian cinema operator, has signed an agreement to acquire 13 US Showcase Cinemas locations, the company announced Wednesday, marking one of its most significant single-transaction expansions into the North American market since it entered the region through its 2017 purchase of Landmark Cinemas in Canada.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed in the announcement. The deal adds 13 venues to Kinepolis's existing US network, which the company has been building incrementally as it seeks to compete with domestic giants AMC Entertainment and Regal Cinemas in a post-pandemic exhibition landscape still recalibrating admissions volumes and ancillary spend. Kinepolis had previously acquired US-based Landmark Theatres in 2019, establishing its initial American presence.

For the food and beverage industry, the acquisition carries direct commercial weight. Concession sales — spanning premium beverages, alcoholic drinks, hot food programmes and branded partnerships — have become the primary margin driver for modern cinema operators as ticket revenues face structural pressure from streaming competition. Kinepolis has invested heavily in elevated F&B concepts across its European estate, and analysts have noted the group's tendency to reformat acquired sites to reflect its premium concession model, which typically generates higher per-head spend than legacy US competitors. Showcase Cinemas, a New England-rooted chain, operates a mix of traditional and dine-in formats that could provide a ready platform for that repositioning. Industry data consistently shows that upgraded in-theatre dining programmes can lift per-patron F&B revenue by 30% or more relative to traditional concession stands, making acquired venue estates an attractive vehicle for beverage and food suppliers seeking new distribution channels. The transaction is also a reminder that consolidation among mid-tier exhibitors continues apace, creating both opportunity and pricing leverage shifts for the packaged-goods and foodservice brands that supply cinema concession programmes across the country.

Kinepolis has not provided a closing timeline or regulatory detail beyond confirming the agreement is signed. The group is expected to outline integration plans, including any changes to concession and hospitality programming at the acquired sites, once the transaction closes.
