Magic Cactus, the Scottsdale-based hemp-derived THC beverage brand, has launched Higher Desert Edition — a limited 7mg THC / 7mg CBD single-serve can — after the initial batch sold out entirely on pre-order. The product, priced at $19.99 per 4-pack, is now restocking mid-September through the company's direct-to-consumer site and at Sprouts Farmers Market locations across Texas and Florida.

The Product

Higher Desert Edition launches in a single flavor, Mojave Berry, built on the brand's sparkling prickly pear cactus water base with real fruit juice, L-theanine, and magnesium. At 20 calories and no added sugar, the 1:1 THC-to-CBD ratio represents a deliberate step up from Magic Cactus's microdose core lineup — still below the 10mg per-container threshold that the company says outsells all other SKUs in most retail hemp beverage sets. The can is positioned as a single-serve occasion rather than a sessionable format.

Grocery Traction

Magic Cactus entered roughly 120 Sprouts stores across Texas and Florida in mid-January 2026, followed by The Fresh Market in North Carolina and Florida in February. The brand ranked first in Sprouts' hemp THC beverage set for the first half of 2026, according to SPINS data cited by the company. Wholesale revenue year-to-date is up more than 200.0% over the same period in 2025. The grocery channel now represents approximately 40.0% of total door count, a deliberate build-out in everyday retail rather than smoke shops or convenience stores where high-potency products typically lead.

"Sprouts shoppers already read labels, they already care about what's in the can, and they're already looking for a better option for a Tuesday night or a backyard hang," said Jonny Locarni, Founder and CEO of Magic Cactus. "We're not asking anyone to walk into a new kind of store. We're just showing up where they already shop."

Capital and Competition

Listen Ventures, the Chicago-based consumer venture firm whose portfolio includes Calm and Factor, led Magic Cactus's Seed round in early 2025 and has made a follow-on investment in 2026. Tonic Ventures and other consumer-focused investors also hold positions. "There is a sea of hemp THC beverages in the market but very few brands," said Jeff Cantalupo, Founder and Managing Partner at Listen Ventures. "Magic Cactus has built a cult following, a brand that people want to be seen drinking."

The launch arrives as the hemp beverage category navigates regulatory uncertainty. Federal legislation passed in November 2025 capped finished hemp products at 0.4mg THC per container — a threshold widely viewed as unworkable by operators. Congress subsequently delayed the effective date to December 11, 2026, extending the window for a revised framework. Magic Cactus has positioned its low-dose, grocery-first model as aligned with the kind of responsible regulation it expects to emerge, drawing an analogy to the regulatory bifurcation between beer and wine versus spirits. Locarni has said the brand has "always operated like we'd be regulated the way a beer is."

The functional beverage segment — where brands compete on ingredients, occasion-fit, and retail adjacency as much as intoxicant potency — is expanding rapidly. The hemp THC beverage subset has attracted significant investment and retailer interest even amid the regulatory overhang, with grocery chains emerging as the primary battleground for mainstream positioning. Magic Cactus's strategy of anchoring in natural grocery, pairing low dosing with clean-label ingredients, and avoiding high-potency positioning reflects a broader shift in how better-for-you beverage brands approach the THC category. Over the coming months, the company said it plans to deepen its grocery footprint and develop additional products built specifically for the grocery channel.
