Maple Leaf Foods (TSX: MFI) posted second-quarter sales of $1.02 billion for the period ended June 30, 2026, up 1.6% from $1.004 billion in the prior-year period, as sustained demand for poultry products and improved operating efficiencies more than offset volume softness in its Prepared Foods segment. Earnings from continuing operations reached $41 million, or $0.33 per basic share, compared with $39 million, or $0.31 per share, a year earlier.

The Numbers

Adjusted EBITDA rose 4.8% to $137 million, expanding the Adjusted EBITDA margin by 40 basis points to 13.4% — the clearest measure of progress for investors tracking the company's post-pork-spinoff earnings profile. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share came in at $0.44, a 33.3% increase from $0.33 in the comparable quarter, reflecting both operating leverage and materially lower interest costs following the divestiture of pork operations in Q4 2025. Year-to-date Adjusted EBITDA of $259 million is tracking ahead of the pace needed to hit the low end of full-year guidance. Gross profit grew 2.5% to $192 million, lifting the gross margin to 18.8% from 18.7%. SG&A expenses increased 4.9% to $105 million, driven by timing of advertising spend and higher consulting fees. Net debt stood at $1.07 billion at June 30, with a net debt to trailing twelve-month Adjusted EBITDA ratio of 2.2x versus 2.1x a year ago — a slight uptick largely attributable to working capital timing rather than incremental borrowing. Free cash flow was an outflow of $19 million in the quarter, compared with an inflow of $216 million a year earlier; the prior-year figure included $58 million of cash contributed by the now-divested pork operations, making the comparison largely non-meaningful on a like-for-like basis.

Segment Dynamics

The Poultry unit — which now consolidates both fresh and further-processed poultry following a commercial and supply-chain reorganisation and represents roughly 40% of total sales — drove the headline beat, with segment sales rising 7.1% on higher volumes, improved channel mix, and pricing. The performance underscores broader structural tailwinds in the Canadian poultry market, where domestic supply management and sustained consumer demand for white protein have insulated producers from some of the cost volatility hitting other protein categories. Prepared Foods, which accounts for the remaining 60% of sales, saw revenue fall 2.0% as lower volumes and elevated trade promotion spending outweighed pricing gains and improved product mix. That unit now sources a meaningful share of its pork raw material from Canada Packers Inc., the entity spun off from Maple Leaf at the end of 2025, introducing a degree of supplier concentration that management acknowledges as an ongoing risk factor in its supply chain oversight.

Guidance and Capital Returns

Curtis Frank, President and Chief Executive Officer of Maple Leaf Foods, said the results demonstrate the durability of the company's pivot to a brand-led consumer packaged goods model. "With approximately 4% year-to-date revenue growth and continued strong Adjusted EBITDA performance, we remain on track to deliver our 2026 outlook of mid-single-digit revenue growth, Adjusted EBITDA of $520 million to $540 million, and maintaining an investment-grade balance sheet," Frank said. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.21 per share ($0.84 annualised), payable September 29, 2026 to shareholders of record September 8. Maple Leaf also returned capital through share repurchases under its Normal Course Issuer Bid, with total capital returned to shareholders in the quarter reaching $41 million. The company's Fuel for Growth cost-management programme continues to run alongside ongoing restructuring, with restructuring charges declining to $1.1 million in Q2 2026 from $2.7 million in the prior-year period — a signal that the heaviest transformation costs are in the rear-view mirror.
