Maple Leaf Foods (TSX: MFI) posted third-quarter Adjusted EBITDA of $129 million, up 15.4% from $112 million a year earlier, as improved sales mix and tighter cost controls lifted the Mississauga-based protein company's profitability even as food-inflation pressures mounted. The result extended the company's streak to eight consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue growth.
The Numbers
Net sales for the three months ended September 30, 2026 rose 2.4% to $1.035 billion from $1.011 billion in the prior-year period. Gross profit increased 8.0% to $176 million, pushing gross margin to 17.0% from 16.1%. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell 5.4% to $96 million, aided by lower variable compensation and the timing of advertising outlays. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 140 basis points to 12.5%, while Adjusted Basic Earnings per Share jumped 71.4% to $0.36 from $0.21. Earnings from continuing operations were $22 million, or $0.18 per basic share, essentially flat with the prior-year $23 million. Reported net earnings declined year-over-year to $22 million from $43 million in Q3 2025, the difference attributable entirely to the absence of income from the pork operations divested in Q4 2025. Free cash flow surged to $175 million from $46 million a year ago, reflecting working-capital timing and $35 million of incremental receivables sold under an expanded securitization programme. Net debt fell $415 million year-over-year to $940 million, reducing the net-debt-to-trailing-twelve-months Adjusted EBITDA ratio to 1.9 times from 2.0 times.
Segment Dynamics
Maple Leaf now operates two reporting segments following the Q4 2025 pork spin-off. Poultry, which accounts for roughly 40% of sales, grew revenue 4.3% in the quarter, driven by improved channel mix and pricing across retail and foodservice, partially offset by lower industrial volumes. Prepared Foods, representing approximately 60% of sales, grew 1.3%, with gains from improved product mix and related-party revenue partially offset by lower volumes and higher trade-promotion spending. Year-to-date, consolidated sales of $3.018 billion were up 3.3% from $2.921 billion, with Poultry up 7.6% and Prepared Foods up 0.4%. The company attributed the nine-month margin improvement — Adjusted EBITDA margin of 12.9% versus 12.3% — to efficiency gains and a richer sales mix, though input-cost inflation offset some of the pricing benefit. The pork operations, now operating as Canada Packers Inc., remain Prepared Foods' primary pork supplier under a transition supply agreement.
Guidance and Capital Return
Curtis Frank, President and Chief Executive Officer, said the company entered 2026 expecting a broadly stable external environment but instead faced renewed inflation in food production worldwide that pressured both costs and consumers, particularly in the second half. As a result, management now expects full-year Adjusted EBITDA to land around the bottom of its previously stated range of $520 million to $540 million, while still projecting revenue and profit growth over 2025 in the fourth quarter. Capital expenditure guidance was revised to $130 million to $150 million. The company reaffirmed mid-single-digit revenue growth for fiscal 2026, approximately 10% dividend growth, and a commitment to maintaining an investment-grade balance sheet. It also reiterated its 2030 targets: approximately $5 billion in revenue, approximately $750 million in Adjusted EBITDA, and cumulative free cash flow of $1.7 billion to $1.8 billion, with leverage held below 3.0 times. Year-to-date, Maple Leaf returned $119 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases under its Normal Course Issuer Bid. The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.21 per share ($0.84 annualised), payable December 31, 2026 to shareholders of record December 17, 2026.
