The Promotion

McAlister's Deli is activating a month-long promotional calendar around National Potato Month, introducing a new limited-time offering and a loyalty-linked buy-one-get-one deal designed to drive repeat visits into October. The campaign, branded Spud-tember, centers on the chain's signature Giant Spuds — oversized baked potatoes that have anchored the menu since the brand's founding in 1989.

The new limited-time build, the Spicy Green Chili Aioli Pork Spud, runs exclusively through September at participating locations. The item layers a creamy green chili aioli over the brand's standard oversized baked potato base, adding a spiced profile intended to extend trial among existing guests. McAlister's has not disclosed pricing for the LTO.

Loyalty Mechanics

The BOGO mechanic targets McAlister's Rewards members specifically: any qualifying Spud purchase made between September 1 and September 30 generates a complimentary Spud reward redeemable in October — effectively bridging two promotional months with a single transaction. The reward posts to member accounts within 24 to 48 hours of the qualifying order, with a cap of two rewards earnable during the window. Add-ons, extras, taxes, and fees are excluded; the offer is not valid for catering orders or in conjunction with third-party delivery.

Jessica Osborne, Vice President of Marketing at McAlister's Deli, framed the promotion as a natural extension of the brand's core identity. "Spud-tember gives us the opportunity to celebrate the menu item that has become synonymous with our brand while introducing guests to a new flavor experience with Spicy Green Chili Aioli," Osborne said.

Market Context

The campaign arrives as fast-casual operators lean harder on loyalty mechanics to sustain traffic amid persistent consumer value sensitivity. Deferred reward structures — in which a September purchase unlocks an October benefit — have gained traction across the segment as a low-cost tool for extending promotional lift beyond the initial campaign window, without the margin drag of an immediate discount. For McAlister's, which operates more than 570 restaurants across 31 states as of late June 2026, even a modest improvement in frequency among loyalty members translates into meaningful incremental volume at scale.

Limited-time baked-potato formats also fit a broader fast-casual menu innovation trend toward center-of-plate customization, where operators position a core ingredient — in this case the potato — as a platform rather than a side. That framing allows for relatively low-cost menu extensions while reinforcing category differentiation. McAlister's has historically used its Giant Spuds to occupy a distinct position against sandwich-focused competitors, and Spud-tember extends that positioning into a dedicated seasonal campaign.

Operators and franchisees in the fast-casual restaurant segment will be watching whether the loyalty bridge mechanic demonstrably lifts October visit rates — a metric that, if positive, could inform future cross-month promotional architecture across the Focus Brands portfolio, which owns McAlister's Deli alongside Jamba, Cinnabon, Carvel, Auntie Anne's, and Schlotzsky's.
