McCormick & Company (NYSE: MKC) said Tuesday it has appointed Cindy Hoots, former Chief Digital Officer and Chief Information Officer at AstraZeneca PLC, to its Board of Directors, effective June 1, 2026. The move adds a technology-focused voice to the Hunt Valley, Maryland-based flavor company's governance structure as the food industry accelerates investment in artificial intelligence and supply-chain digitisation.

Hoots brings board-level credentials from the pharmaceutical industry, where she oversaw digital transformation and enterprise modernisation across a multibillion-dollar global organisation. Her stated areas of expertise include cybersecurity, AI strategy, risk management, and organisational effectiveness — competencies that McCormick has flagged as priorities as it works to modernise operations and defend margins against persistent input-cost volatility.

The appointment signals a broader trend among large consumer-staples companies to recruit non-traditional technology executives onto boards previously dominated by consumer-goods or retail veterans. Rivals including Conagra Brands and Kraft Heinz have similarly moved to strengthen digital oversight at the governance level in recent years, reflecting pressure from institutional investors to demonstrate AI readiness and data-security resilience.

For McCormick, the timing is notable. The company has been navigating a challenging macroeconomic environment characterised by uneven consumer spending on branded spices and flavoring products. Incremental board-level digital expertise could support management's longer-term push to leverage data analytics in pricing, demand forecasting, and new-product development — areas where technology leadership has become a competitive differentiator in packaged food.

McCormick did not disclose compensation terms for the directorship or indicate whether Hoots would join a specific board committee. The company's board will comprise 12 members following the appointment. No changes to executive management or financial guidance were announced in connection with the appointment.
