The Entry Point
McDonald's USA is stepping into the energy drink category for the first time, announcing the national rollout of the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer at participating U.S. restaurants beginning August 17. The move extends the chain's two-year push to build a premium beverage platform — anchored by crafted sodas and Refreshers — into one of foodservice's fastest-growing drink segments.
The new offering blends Red Bull's signature energy formula with blue raspberry syrup and freeze-dried dragonfruit inclusions. A reduced-sugar variant substitutes Red Bull Zero as the base, and participating locations will also carry standalone 8.4-ounce cans of Red Bull for customers who prefer the drink unmodified. The chain operates approximately 13,500 U.S. restaurants, roughly 95.0% of which are franchise-owned.
Why Beverages, Why Now
The energy drink market has become a marquee battleground for quick-service operators seeking to lift average ticket and drive incremental visits. Convenience and specialty coffee channels have long competed for energy-seeking consumers, but McDonald's scale gives it unusual reach: a single national rollout instantly places the product within a few miles of the vast majority of U.S. consumers. For Red Bull, the partnership extends the brand's foodservice distribution into the country's largest burger chain.
"We've seen growing enthusiasm for our crafted sodas and refreshers as fans look for more variety and options to fit every occasion," said Alyssa Buetikofer, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, McDonald's USA. "They loved the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer when we first tested it in the U.S., so we're excited to give fans nationwide the energy they've been craving with Red Bull. And we're just getting started."
The comment signals that the energy category entry is unlikely to be a one-off. McDonald's tested the Dragonberry Energizer in select U.S. markets before the national launch — a cadence it has used for other beverage bets — suggesting the chain is treating energy drinks as a durable menu pillar rather than a limited-time promotional vehicle.
Broader Beverage Expansion
The energy launch arrives alongside a broader wave of crafted soda additions designed to deepen McDonald's beverage differentiation against fast-casual rivals and specialty chains. New additions include a Vanilla Swirl, which pairs smooth vanilla flavor and creamy cold foam with the customer's choice of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, or Coke Zero Sugar. The chain is also introducing reduced-sugar crafted sodas built on Diet Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar, and Sprite Zero Sugar bases, as well as an Orange Dream variant featuring Fanta — all available where applicable.
The simultaneous push across energy, zero-sugar, and flavored-soda formats reflects a strategy trade analysts have flagged across the quick-service sector: beverage margin profiles are structurally superior to food, making drink mix enrichment one of the clearest levers for restaurant-level profitability. As reported in our coverage of QSR beverage trends and the broader crafted soda surge in foodservice, operators that have invested in premium drink platforms have consistently outperformed peers on same-store sales in recent quarters.
For industry observers tracking McDonald's trajectory, the Red Bull partnership and concurrent menu additions underscore that the chain's beverage ambitions — seeded when crafted sodas first launched — are now maturing into a systematic category strategy with both branded co-marketing muscle and operational scale behind them.
