The New Capability
Meijer has launched an advance-scheduling feature for vaccinations that allows patients to book appointments before vaccines are physically in the retailer's inventory — a structural shift that addresses one of the more persistent friction points in retail pharmacy immunization programs. The tool, live now at rx.meijer.com, covers flu, RSV, shingles, pneumonia, and COVID immunizations, subject to age and eligibility criteria.
The timing is deliberate. With the academic calendar restarting and respiratory illness season accelerating toward its seasonal peak, the Midwest supercenter operator is positioning its roughly 500 pharmacy locations as a first-call resource for working families juggling back-to-school health requirements alongside their own preventive-care schedules. Medicare members are eligible to earn mPerks loyalty points on qualifying vaccine visits, adding a consumer-retention dimension to what is primarily a health-services expansion.
Clinic Scale
The company's off-site vaccine effort provides additional context for the announcement's reach. Meijer held more than 200 vaccine clinics across the Midwest in 2025, administering more than 7,000 vaccines to employees, nursing-home residents, congregants, and students through partnerships with employers, churches, and schools — at no charge to the host organization. That footprint underscores a broader trend in retail grocery and supercenter formats: pharmacy-led health services are increasingly a competitive differentiator, not an ancillary line.
"With our new schedule-ahead feature, our trained pharmacists are ready to help patients plan well in advance, make informed decisions, and stay up to date on their health when it works best for them," said Jackie Morse, Group Vice President of Health and Pharmacy at Meijer.
What It Means for Retail Pharmacy
For the grocery and supercenter sector, Meijer's move reflects a wider push by large-format retailers to capture health-services volume that independent pharmacies and urgent-care operators have traditionally held. Advance scheduling reduces the walk-in uncertainty that can deter high-risk populations — elderly shoppers, caregivers — from completing immunization courses. It also allows pharmacies to smooth staffing and inventory demand signals ahead of peak-season surges, an operational benefit as supply-chain constraints on adjuvanted flu and RSV vaccines have complicated retail dispensing in recent years.
The initiative connects to documented consumer-behavior shifts covered by Food & Beverage Magazine and tracked across the sector: shoppers increasingly expect wellness services bundled with grocery trips, and retailers that embed pharmacy touchpoints into the weekly shopping occasion build measurable loyalty advantages. Meijer's mPerks integration — extending points eligibility to Medicare members specifically — suggests the company is targeting older, high-frequency shoppers whose pharmacy spend is a significant revenue driver.
On-site clinic capacity can be requested directly by organizations, with interest forms managed through a Microsoft Forms portal. Customers without appointments can still access pharmacists via walk-in, the Meijer app, or by texting "RX" to 75049. COVID vaccinations remain outside the advance-scheduling feature pending regulatory approval anticipated this fall, the company noted. Competitors operating at comparable scale in the Midwest — including Kroger and Walmart — have similarly expanded pharmacy-based immunization programs, making schedule friction a genuine differentiator in a crowded market.
