The Launch
Mission Foods, the Irving, Texas-based manufacturer behind the Mission® tortilla brand, is expanding its Better for You portfolio with four chip varieties split across two new sub-lines: Mission® Protein Tortilla Style Chips, in Chile Limón and Jalapeño, and Mission® Grain Free Tortilla Style Chips, in Sea Salt and Hint of Lime. The products are on shelf now at Kroger and its affiliated banners, with additional retail distribution set to follow through the fourth quarter of 2026.
What's in the Bag
The Protein Tortilla Style Chips deliver 10 grams of plant-based protein per serving and carry gluten-free and vegan certifications — positioning the line squarely against an expanding field of legume- and pea-protein snack brands that have drawn significant shelf space from conventional tortilla chips over the past three years. The Grain Free line is built around 100% cassava flour, whole chia seeds, and avocado oil, ingredients that signal alignment with paleo and grain-avoidance eating patterns that continue to grow as a share of snack purchasing in the United States. Both sub-lines carry non-GMO ingredient claims and are marketed as a good source of fiber.
"Our Better for You line has always been about giving people trend-setting options that fit their lifestyle and taste great," said Sathish Mohanraju, VP of Sales and Marketing for Mission Foods. "Whether folks are looking for simpler ingredients or a new favorite everyday snack — these new chips are for them."
Market Context
The launch arrives as the broader better-for-you salty snack segment continues to outpace conventional chip sales in U.S. grocery. Functional claims — particularly protein content and simplified ingredient decks — have become key traffic drivers in the snack aisle, prompting legacy tortilla brands to invest in incremental SKUs rather than cede shelf real estate to challenger brands. Mission Foods, which has operated in the United States since 1977 and now runs more than twenty domestic plants alongside international facilities in Europe, Asia, and Mexico, is leveraging its manufacturing scale and existing retailer relationships to move quickly into this space.
Kroger's network of affiliated banners — including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, and others — gives Mission Foods meaningful immediate reach across multiple U.S. regions. Broader national distribution rolling through fall 2026 could substantially expand trial volume before the key holiday snacking period. For operators and category buyers tracking consumer-driven reformulation trends, Mission's move signals that established flatbread manufacturers view functional snacking as a durable line-extension opportunity rather than a niche play.
The product development strategy also reflects wider supply-chain moves among tortilla and grain-based snack producers toward alternative starches such as cassava, which offers a gluten-free, grain-free base without the texture compromises historically associated with chickpea or lentil chips. Mission's use of avocado oil further aligns the Grain Free line with premium-positioned snack fats that resonate with label-conscious grocery shoppers.
