The Strategic Play

Mondelez International (Nasdaq: MDLZ) is deploying a consumer-arbitrated product strategy for the OREO brand, releasing three limited-edition cookie flavors simultaneously across U.S. retail on Aug. 24 and asking shoppers to vote one back into permanent rotation for 2027. The move represents the first time the brand has ceded formal line-extension authority to the public, converting a standard flavor drop into a structured demand-signal exercise.

The three contenders — OREO Banana Pudding Cookies, OREO Deep Fried Cookies, and OREO Chicken & Waffles Cookies — hit grocery and mass-retail shelves nationwide on Aug. 24, following a presale window and TikTok Shop availability beginning Aug. 17. A voting portal at OREO.com/twist-lick-vote accepts ballots from Aug. 17 through Oct. 12, with the winning SKU announced Oct. 13 and slated for a limited national retail return in 2027.

What's at Stake

For Mondelez, which reported approximately $38.5 billion in net revenues for full-year 2025, the campaign is as much a retail-velocity mechanism as a marketing event. Releasing three SKUs simultaneously raises incremental shelf-placement and facings during the back-half promotional window, while the sweepstakes mechanic — every eligible vote enters participants in a drawing for a year's supply of original OREO cookies — drives repeat purchase and first-party data capture.

The product architecture also reflects Mondelez's own snacking research. Rohit Sakhamuri, Senior Brand Manager for OREO Innovation, cited the company's 2026 State of Snacking report, which identified 'delicious,' 'fun,' and 'tasty' as leading benefit attributes in social conversations. Each of the three flavors targets a distinct cultural food moment: banana pudding taps Southern dessert nostalgia; deep-fried channels fairground indulgence; and chicken & waffles — featuring a waffle-embossed cookie and dual-layered sweet-savory creme — stakes out the brand's boldest savory foray to date. Sakhamuri noted the three flavors required more than a year of parallel R&D to achieve the sensory balance expected by the brand's consumer base.

Consumer Engagement Model

The campaign represents a broader shift in how large packaged-goods companies are managing limited-edition snack launches in an era of fragmented media attention. Rather than sequencing flavor releases and reading scanner data after the fact, Mondelez is front-loading consumer preference data while simultaneously generating earned media through the competitive voting mechanic. Matt Foley, Vice President of OREO, described the initiative as elevating the brand relationship from a "simple product drop into a dynamic, two-way conversation."

The TikTok Shop component is also notable. By routing presale inventory through SnackWorks' TikTok Shop storefront before full retail availability, Mondelez gains an early read on digital-native demand and creator-driven conversion — a distribution test with implications for confectionery e-commerce strategy more broadly. OREO sells more than 20 billion cookies annually in the U.S. alone, out of roughly 60 billion units sold globally, giving the brand substantial baseline volume against which to measure any incremental lift from the campaign.

Trade buyers and category managers tracking the biscuit aisle should watch sell-through velocity across all three flavors during the Aug. 24–Oct. 12 window; the split between SKUs will offer a rare public dataset on whether sweet-nostalgic, indulgent-fried, or sweet-savory positioning commands stronger pull in the current snacking environment.
