The Market Signal
Napa Cellars, the Oakville, California winery founded in 1976, has launched a Friendsgiving Registry — an online cost-sharing platform built around chef-curated menus and wine pairings — in direct response to survey data showing that 65% of consumers are actively seeking ways to reduce the financial burden of holiday hosting. The move positions the heritage winery in a growing consumer segment where premium wine brands are embedding themselves in gathering culture rather than waiting to be selected at the shelf.
The Registry grew out of the Napa Cellars 2026 Friendsgiving Trends Report, a proprietary consumer survey that identified rising food costs as the single largest obstacle to holiday hosting this year. The mechanic is straightforward: a host selects one of three themed menus, claims the main dish and a wine pairing, then distributes a shareable registry link so guests can each claim a course — side, salad, appetizer, or dessert — along with a corresponding bottle. The platform is designed to serve groups of 20 adults with buffet-style quantities.
What the Data Shows
The Trends Report surfaces several commercially relevant shifts in informal holiday entertaining. Some 67.2% of respondents prefer a daytime format — 35.6% favour a brunch-style gathering and 31.6% a late-afternoon sip-and-graze — a signal that could reshape both menu planning and wine category selection for beverage directors and retail buyers heading into the holiday quarter. On the food side, elevated mac and cheese ranked as the must-have side dish for 40% of respondents, well ahead of mashed potatoes at 25.2% and traditional stuffing at 10.4%. The décor-versus-food spending split is striking: 79.6% said they would spend extra on food, while fewer than 10% would do the same on décor. For wine purchasing specifically, food versatility was the top selection criterion at 48.4%, followed by value in the $20 to $35 price range at 31.2% — a range that squarely covers much of the Napa Cellars portfolio.
Three Menus, Three Occasions
Chef James Houghton, director of culinary for Napa Cellars, developed three distinct menus mapped to the survey's top-indexed gathering formats. The Pass the Mac menu converts the number-one ranked side into a six-dish mac-and-cheese tasting bar paired with Napa Cellars Chardonnay. The Y2K Throwback Thanksgiving reconstructs a classic holiday plate — roast turkey, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, pumpkin and apple pie — paired with the winery's Cabernet Sauvignon and 2023 Pinot Noir. The Brunch-Giving menu, designed for the survey's top timing preference, centers on a Sweet Corn Blini with Crème Fraîche and turkey-cheddar biscuit sliders, with Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc as the anchor pairing.
"Friendsgiving should feel like a celebration, not a chore," said Chef Houghton. "Our recipes focus on high-reward, big-flavor dishes that let your guests shine by bringing a killer side dish while keeping your prep super easy."
The cost-distribution model aligns with a broader foodservice and retail wine trend toward experiential, occasion-led merchandising, where producers compete not just on varietal or vintage but on how seamlessly they integrate into a consumer's gathering plan. For operators and retailers tracking holiday beverage purchasing patterns, the $20 to $35 price band preference identified in the Trends Report underscores continued consumer value-consciousness even within a premium category like Napa Valley wine. The registry is live now at napacellarsfriendsgiving.com ahead of November celebrations.
