Calypso Harvest, a Trinidadian-inspired frozen food brand operated through Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Victual Solutions, has obtained Non-GMO Project Verified status for three SKUs — Dhalpuri Roti, Bussupshut (Paratha Roti), and Trinidad Doubles — with costs underwritten by the Non-GMO Project's Equitable Transfer Program (ETP). The verification marks the first time an ETP recipient has brought Caribbean or Trinidadian frozen foods through the program.
The Program's Track Record
Launched in 2023, the ETP was designed to lower the financial and procedural barriers that prevent smaller, minority-led food businesses from obtaining independent, third-party verification. Since inception, it has disbursed more than $46,000 across 21 businesses, supporting verification for 41 products in total. Applications for the current funding round remain open through November 13, 2026. In a meaningful structural expansion, the program now also covers Non-UPF Verified, the Non-GMO Project's newer certification that evaluates ingredient integrity, product formulation, and processing methods — giving eligible applicants a second pathway to verified status.
Founder's Trajectory
Calypso Harvest's founder, Natalia J. Kalloo, began her food-business career selling handcrafted spice blends at Washington, D.C. farmers markets in 2019 under the Trini Vybez banner, later expanding into a food truck and restaurant concept before pivoting to the frozen food aisle. The frozen format allows broader retail distribution and a longer shelf life than foodservice operations, a trade-off increasingly attractive to emerging specialty food brands seeking national scale without the capital intensity of brick-and-mortar expansion.
In 2025, Kalloo founded Victual Solutions, a nonprofit focused on food access and economic development in Ward 7, a historically underserved area of Washington, D.C. Planned programs include a community farmers market and initiatives to reduce fresh food costs for residents. Calypso Harvest's commercial revenue is structured to reinvest into those community programs. "It is about creating greater transparency around the foods we stand behind, strengthening trust with our customers, and showing that small, underrepresented food businesses can pursue rigorous standards while honoring the foods and traditions that are important to our communities," Kalloo said.
What It Means for the Market
The Non-GMO Project Verified label, represented by the Butterfly mark, appears on tens of thousands of products in the U.S. and Canada and remains one of the most recognised on-pack transparency signals in natural and conventional retail. Its presence on a nascent frozen ethnic-foods line is commercially significant: retailer category buyers in natural and specialty grocery channels increasingly use third-party certifications as a de-risking mechanism when evaluating new supplier relationships, particularly for brands without established sales velocity data.
Megan Westgate, founder and CEO of the Non-GMO Project, framed the ETP's strategic intent in direct terms: "A better food system needs more voices, more traditions and more people shaping its future." The program's expansion to include Non-UPF Verified broadens the addressable pool of applicants at a moment when ultra-processed food formulation has become a top-tier regulatory and consumer concern across the foodservice and retail supply chain. As non-GMO and clean-label standards continue to converge with the emerging anti-ultra-processing movement, dual-pathway grant access could accelerate verification adoption among smaller operators who would otherwise deprioritise certification costs.
The Non-GMO Project, Victual Solutions, and East Capitol Urban Farm will co-host a free virtual workshop for food vendors, growers, and sellers on October 22, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. ET, covering verification requirements and documentation as part of Non-GMO Month.
