The New SKU

North Coast Brewing Company is expanding its Rasputin franchise with Chill Rasputin, a 4.5% ABV sessionable stout packaged in 16-ounce four-packs and scheduled to reach select retail shelves in early October 2026. The Fort Bragg, California-based Certified B Corp is positioning the new SKU as a lower-intensity companion to Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, one of the most decorated beers in its award-winning portfolio since the brewery's founding in 1988.

Format and Sustainability

The release targets a measurable shift in craft-beer purchasing behaviour: volume share in the session and mid-strength beer segment has expanded consistently as consumers moderate alcohol intake without abandoning flavour-forward categories. Dark beers — stouts and porters — have historically skewed toward higher ABV expressions, leaving an underserved gap that several regional brewers are now competing to fill. Chill Rasputin's flavour profile — dark chocolate and roasted coffee over what the brewery describes as a smooth, sleek body — is engineered to deliver recognisable Old Rasputin character while keeping the alcohol content well below the original's double-digit strength. The format choice of 16-ounce cans in four-packs aligns with a retail price tier that trades above mainstream lagers but remains accessible to the casual craft buyer.

On the packaging side, North Coast is shipping Chill Rasputin four-packs with Eco-Rings®, a 100% compostable alternative to conventional plastic ring carriers. The decision reflects growing pressure from both retail partners and consumers for sustainable craft beer packaging, and it reinforces North Coast's B Corp positioning at a time when environmental credentials are increasingly influencing on-shelf placement decisions at independent and natural-channel grocery accounts.

Strategic Context

"Old Rasputin has developed an incredibly loyal following over the years," said Jennifer Owen, Chief Executive Officer of North Coast Brewing. "With Chill Rasputin, we created a beer that honors that legacy while offering a lighter, more approachable option for a wider range of occasions. It's still unmistakably Rasputin, just a little more relaxed."

The launch arrives as the broader craft beer segment navigates a prolonged period of volume pressure, with the Brewers Association reporting that small and independent brewers have faced softening draught and off-premise sales. Brand extensions built on established equity — rather than new brand creation — have emerged as a lower-risk commercialisation strategy for mid-sized regional breweries looking to grow household penetration without cannibalising core SKUs. North Coast's approach mirrors similar moves seen across the craft beer M&A and brand extension landscape, where legacy names are being leveraged to court younger and more moderation-minded drinkers.

Chill Rasputin will be available through the beer locator at northcoastbrewing.com and at the North Coast Brew Shop and Pub in Fort Bragg. Distribution scope beyond select retailers has not been disclosed. As Food & Beverage Magazine has noted, sessionable craft entries tied to iconic brand families tend to outperform entirely new labels in initial retail sell-through, particularly in mature markets where shelf space is constrained.
