The Hire

Ohalo Genetics has named Rob Dunlop as Vice President, Global Commercial, adding a three-decade agriculture industry veteran to its commercial leadership as the South San Francisco-based seed technology company moves to scale its Boosted Breeding™ platform. Dunlop most recently served as Chief Commercial Officer at Inari, where he led global commercial strategy for high-value seed designs in broadacre crops.

The Commercial Mandate

In his new role, Dunlop will build out the agronomic support infrastructure for growers adopting Ohalo's true potato seed system and manage the channel partnerships needed to bring Boosted seed products to international markets. True potato seed — distributed as small, plantable seed rather than the conventional bulky tuber — represents a fundamental shift in how potato farming operates, one that requires retraining growers, testing new field methods, and providing season-long agronomic support. Ohalo has positioned Boosted Potato as capable of delivering yield gains in excess of 20.0%, eliminating the majority of conventional production costs — including expenditures on storage, equipment, fuel, fungicides, and labor — and reducing pest and disease risk. Commercial potato farmers, the company says, can target $2,000 or more in additional profit per acre.

"True potato seed is an entirely new crop system for farmers, requiring testing new farming methods, training growers on those methods, and supporting them throughout the season," said Dave Friedberg, Chief Executive Officer of Ohalo. "Rob has spent his career at the intersection of breeding, the field, and commercial."

A Deep Agricultural Pedigree

Dunlop's résumé tracks the consolidation of the global seed industry over the past three decades. Before Inari, he served as Vice President, North America Seed at Nutrien Ag Solutions, overseeing the company's seed business across the region after earlier holding leadership roles in digital, agronomy, and breeding within the same organization. Before that, he spent more than a decade at Monsanto and subsequently Bayer, operating across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States in breeding, technology strategy, and sales leadership. He began his career as a tree breeder in South Africa before transitioning into corn breeding — a background that gives him direct field-level perspective across multiple geographies and crop types.

The appointment is a clear signal that Ohalo is entering a more commercially intensive phase. The company, founded in 2019, is advancing Boosted Breeding beyond potatoes into a broader crop pipeline, a program that demands the kind of agronomic and channel infrastructure Dunlop has spent his career constructing. For food and beverage supply-chain operators and foodservice buyers tracking ingredient cost trajectories, higher potato yields and lower production costs at the farm gate could eventually influence processed-potato and frozen-food input pricing. Ohalo's trajectory is also worth monitoring by agri-food investors, given the platform's potential to reshape commodity crop economics across multiple categories.

The hire follows a pattern of established agri-industry executives gravitating toward seed-technology startups, as covered in our recent look at talent flows in agri-food innovation and the broader competitive dynamics explored in our coverage of supply-chain disruption in specialty crops.
