The Partnership

OLIPOP, the functional soda brand distributed through more than 65,000 grocery outlets nationwide, has struck a co-marketing agreement with Whirlpool around the appliance maker's 36-inch True Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator — a unit the company claims is the industry's first refrigerator to integrate a nugget ice maker directly into the door. The collaboration, announced September 23, pairs one of the fastest-growing non-alcoholic beverage brands with a hardware feature that until now has been confined to foodservice and standalone countertop units.

What Operators and Retailers Should Watch

The commercial mechanics carry more weight than the sweepstakes headline. Starting in late October and running into early 2027, consumers who purchase either of the two qualifying Whirlpool nugget ice refrigerator models — the WRFC7436T or WRMC7436T — at retail will receive a complimentary case of OLIPOP, subject to redemption. That arrangement gives OLIPOP incremental trial at the point of a considered, high-ticket purchase decision, while giving Whirlpool a premium beverage partner that reinforces the appliance's functional positioning. The program will be supported across Whirlpool's national retail network for the duration of the campaign.

Nugget ice — the soft, chewable pellet style popularized by fast-food chains and convenience operators — has generated sustained consumer demand as a premium at-home feature. Bringing that format into a residential refrigerator door, rather than requiring a separate appliance, is a product differentiation play by Whirlpool at a moment when the home appliance category faces margin pressure. For OLIPOP, the tie-in extends the brand's presence beyond grocery and e-commerce into the durable-goods aisle, a channel that reaches shoppers at a moment of high household investment.

Product and Brand Context

The refrigerator's integrated nugget ice maker produces up to three cups of filtered ice per hour and 15 pounds over 24 hours, storing up to 2.4 pounds at a time. The unit also includes a conventional cubed-ice maker in the freezer, dual dispensing capability, an EasyReach Zone for tall-item storage, and a Flexible Temperature Drawer. Four-door configurations add a Freezer-to-Fridge Zone. Anti-clumping technology is built into the nugget ice compartment to prevent pellets from fusing during storage.

OLIPOP, launched in 2018, positions its carbonated beverages as a functional alternative to conventional soda, formulated with 2.0 to 5.0 grams of sugar per can and characterized as a high-fiber drink. The brand's retail footprint spans Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Kroger, among others. The case offered through the Whirlpool promotion will include Crisp Apple and the newly launched Caramel Apple varieties.

"People love the unique texture of nugget ice for the way it feels and the way it elevates beverages, but up until now, the only way to enjoy it was to eat out or to buy a separate appliance," said Emily Spaeter, Whirlpool Senior Brand Manager. The partnership underscores a broader pattern in the functional beverage segment, where brands are pursuing distribution and trial channels well outside conventional grocery shelf placements.

For beverage manufacturers, appliance co-marketing represents an emerging vehicle to reach consumers during high-consideration purchase moments. The strategy echoes earlier moves in the non-alcoholic beverage category where brands have sought to embed themselves in lifestyle contexts rather than competing purely on shelf space. Whether the Whirlpool retail activation translates into measurable volume lift for OLIPOP will depend on redemption rates — a figure neither company disclosed at announcement.
