The Product
Om Mushrooms is entering the functional coffee segment with a brew-in Lion's Mane booster that the Vista, Calif.-based company says delivers five times more bioactive compounds than other brewed functional coffees — without altering the flavor or preparation ritual of the consumer's existing cup.
Focus Lion's Mane Coffee Booster, which launched October 1 to coincide with International Coffee Day, is designed to be stirred into coffee grounds before brewing via drip, pour-over, French press, or espresso. The company says the result leaves no sediment, no gritty texture, and no discernible mushroom flavor in the finished beverage. Retail pricing is $24.99 for a 30-serving pouch and $45.99 for 60 servings — equating to less than $0.85 per cup, undercutting most specialty-coffee-shop add-ons.
Why It Matters
The launch positions Om Mushrooms squarely in one of functional beverage's fastest-moving subcategories. Adaptogen- and nootropic-infused ready-to-drink coffees and canned lattes have attracted significant venture capital and shelf space at natural grocery chains over the past three years, but most formats require the consumer to abandon their preferred beans or brewing equipment. Om's brew-in format sidesteps that friction by functioning as an ingredient rather than a finished product — a structural distinction that could expand its addressable retail channel beyond the supplement aisle.
"Consumers want support for focus, memory, cognitive health, and mental clarity, and mushrooms play an exciting role in meeting those needs," said Sanjiv Gajiwala, chief executive of Om Mushrooms. "But we have to stop asking people to change their lives to use them. Our job is to make the function fit into their lives."
The cognitive-health supplement market has drawn growing interest from retailers and foodservice operators alike, with Lion's Mane — valued for compounds associated with nerve-growth factor support — emerging as the lead ingredient in the nootropic-coffee conversation. Om has distributed functional mushroom powders, capsules, gummies, and plant protein products through Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market, giving the new SKU an established natural-grocery footprint from day one. The product is also available direct-to-consumer via the brand's own website and on Amazon.
What's Next
The Focus Coffee Booster represents a format extension for Om rather than a channel pivot. The company's existing portfolio spans certified-organic, non-GMO mushrooms grown domestically, and the new product carries the same quality positioning. For natural and specialty retailers navigating a crowded functional-beverage set, a brew-in booster creates a new placement opportunity in the coffee adjacency zone rather than competing directly with canned RTD formats.
For foodservice operators and specialty coffee bars exploring premium add-on revenue streams, a sub-$0.85 ingredient cost at retail suggests a viable wholesale price point for menu incorporation, though Om has not announced a foodservice channel to date. The brand's trajectory — and whether this format draws category followers — will likely be clearer by the first half of 2027 as retail velocity data accumulates.
