The Strategic Pivot

P.F. Chang's has launched a brand-led marketing campaign that marks a deliberate departure from promotion-heavy advertising, as the 33-year-old casual dining chain works to consolidate a sales recovery that has reshaped its competitive standing. The two-minute brand film, set to Lukas Graham's "7 Years," centers on multigenerational dining occasions — birthdays, graduations, family reunions — anchored by signature menu items including Chang's Lettuce Wraps and the Great Wall of Chocolate.

The campaign's commercial logic is rooted in hard data. P.F. Chang's climbed from 22nd to 3rd in same-store sales growth within its casual dining competitive set in less than twelve months, a trajectory the company attributes partly to a marketing overhaul initiated after Holly Smith was appointed Chief Marketing Officer in January. "This film is our way of honoring that history and inviting those guests back to the table, this time with their own families, to keep the tradition going," Smith said.

Traffic Numbers

The timing reflects a broader shift in casual dining operator strategy: leaning into experiential, in-restaurant moments to convert occasional visitors into habitual guests. P.F. Chang's own data offers a pointed illustration. Following the summer launch of its theatrical Sushi Boat — a tableside service format designed for shareable social content — dine-in same-restaurant traffic moved from plus 1.0% before launch to plus 9.2% afterward. That single-initiative swing underscores how experience-driven product introductions are increasingly doing double duty as both traffic drivers and marketing assets across the restaurant sector.

The new creative will run across connected TV, digital streaming, and social media channels, with additional platform-specific cutdowns developed for each environment. The rollout is timed ahead of the holiday season, a high-index period for full-service casual dining that chains including P.F. Chang's, Olive Garden, and Cheesecake Factory have historically treated as a critical sales window.

Multigenerational Positioning

The campaign's central insight — that guests who grew up dining at P.F. Chang's are now bringing their own children — reflects a positioning challenge common to legacy casual dining brands: maintaining relevance across age cohorts without alienating either the core or the next generation of spenders. Rather than launching a value-based promotion or a limited-time menu item to drive trial, P.F. Chang's is betting that emotional brand equity, activated through storytelling, can do the heavier lifting. Director of Brand Marketing Alexa Bunting framed the objective plainly: "From the first sparkler on the Great Wall of Chocolate to sharing our iconic Chang's Lettuce Wraps with their own kids, this is about looking back on the moments and milestones that matter."

The film was produced and edited by Mark Skala of Skalawag Productions, developed in partnership with the P.F. Chang's internal brand marketing team. The chain, which operates more than 300 restaurants across 23 countries and U.S. airport locations, is using the campaign to open what it describes as a broader "season of gathering" heading into Q4. Industry observers tracking casual dining marketing trends will watch whether the sales-rank gains hold as the chain moves further from promotional price messaging and deeper into brand narrative territory. As reported by Food & Beverage Magazine, experiential dining formats continue to be a primary lever for traffic recovery across the full-service segment.
