Philz Coffee is moving beyond its core pour-over format with the launch of four handcrafted matcha beverages, now available across its 80-plus California and Chicago locations. Priced from $6.50 to $7.50, the drinks represent the Oakland-based chain's first deliberate step into the fast-growing matcha segment of the specialty beverage market.
The Menu and Pricing
All four drinks are served iced in 16-ounce portions and built on matcha sourced from Uji, Japan — a region widely regarded as producing some of the world's highest-grade ceremonial and culinary-grade leaf. The base Iced Matcha, layered over sweetened oat milk, is priced at $6.50. Three variants — Strawberry Matcha, Strawberry Mint Matcha, and Salted Caramel Matcha — each carry a $7.50 price point. Oat milk is the default, with 2% dairy available at no additional charge; sweetness levels are also adjustable, consistent with Philz's established customization model.
Andy Mai, Chief Business Officer at Philz Coffee, framed the launch as a response to sustained customer demand. "Our top two requests from customers over the years have been a rewards program and matcha," Mai said. "We wanted to introduce it in a way that feels unmistakably Philz — quality ingredients and bold flavors in a customizable way."
Why the Timing Matters
Matcha has become one of the most commercially active segments in specialty beverages. U.S. foodservice operators from regional independents to national chains have accelerated matcha introductions over the past two years, driven by consumer interest in functional ingredients and premium non-coffee options. For Philz, the timing follows the 2025 rollout of its Philz Rewards loyalty platform — a prerequisite, the company suggests, for building repeat purchase behavior around a new category.
The choice of Uji-origin matcha signals a positioning play toward the premium end of the market, where ingredient provenance has become a differentiator in specialty coffee and tea retail. The drinks are available in-store and via the Philz app, tying category expansion directly to the loyalty infrastructure the chain spent the prior year building.
Competitive and Retail Context
Philz operates as a privately held, California-founded chain with a footprint concentrated in the Bay Area, Southern California, and Chicago. Its relatively focused store count — just over 80 units — means the matcha rollout is a chainwide launch rather than a regional test, a signal of internal confidence in the category. The chain also sells packaged coffee through select grocery retailers and in K-Cup pod format, channels that could eventually carry matcha SKUs if the in-store program gains traction.
For independent and regional operators watching category diversification strategies, the Philz move illustrates a broader pattern: specialty coffee chains treating matcha not as a limited-time offer but as a permanent menu pillar, complete with origin sourcing credentials and a tiered price architecture. Whether a sub-$80-unit chain can sustain meaningful incremental volume through a four-SKU matcha menu — or whether the launch is primarily a loyalty-engagement vehicle — will become clearer as the program matures.
