Pilgrim's has entered the licensed-flavor arena with two new frozen chicken products — Pilgrim's FLAMIN' HOT Chicken Tenders and Pilgrim's FLAMIN' HOT Chicken Bites — rolling out at select retailers nationwide starting October 2026. The launch is a cross-category licensing arrangement with Frito-Lay North America, owner of the FLAMIN' HOT trademark, and signals a deliberate push by Pilgrim's to build brand equity beyond commodity chicken.
The Products
Both SKUs are positioned around dual-benefit messaging: bold licensed flavor layered onto antibiotic-free, all-white-meat protein credentials. The Tenders deliver 20 grams of protein per serving, while the Bites offer 16 grams. Neither contains artificial colors or flavors, and both are designed for air-fryer preparation — 15 minutes for tenders, 11 for bites — a nod to the appliance's continued dominance in home kitchens and its relevance to the frozen convenience segment.
Why It Matters
The frozen chicken category has seen sustained traffic as consumers trade restaurant occasions for at-home alternatives, but it remains intensely competitive, with private label and established brands such as Tyson and Perdue vying for freezer real estate. Pilgrim's, which operates protein processing plants across 14 U.S. states and in several international markets and employs more than 62,000 people globally, has historically been more visible in foodservice and fresh retail than in branded frozen value-added. Attaching to the FLAMIN' HOT platform — which PepsiCo has cultivated across Cheetos, Doritos, and Lay's into a multibillion-dollar flavor identity — gives Pilgrim's a marketing shortcut to consumer recognition in a crowded aisle.
Brad White, Head of Marketing at Pilgrim's, framed the move as part of a broader brand-building mandate. "We're building Pilgrim's to be a brand that makes chicken more exciting," he said, "and bringing an iconic flavor like FLAMIN' HOT to the freezer aisle is exactly what that looks like."
The collaboration also extends PepsiCo's licensing revenue stream beyond snacks. Janelle Rowe, Senior Vice President of Foodservice at PepsiCo Away from Home, characterized the deal as a category-expansion play: bringing the FLAMIN' HOT experience "to a new category, creating another way for consumers to enjoy the bold flavor that has made the brand a cultural phenomenon."
Retail and Competitive Context
The release does not disclose pricing, specific retail partners, or volume targets. That absence of financial detail makes near-term revenue impact difficult to quantify, though licensed-flavor launches in frozen food have historically commanded a modest premium over unflavored equivalents. For Pilgrim's, the more strategic variable is distribution breadth — "select retailers nationwide" leaves room for an expansion announcement if early sell-through warrants it.
The move follows a broader industry pattern of snack-flavor licensing crossing into adjacent refrigerated and frozen proteins. For retailers, co-branded frozen chicken occupies a sweet spot: it satisfies demand for bold, globally inspired flavors in retail meat cases while carrying the kind of brand recognition that reduces the marketing lift required to drive trial. For operators tracking the frozen chicken category's competitive dynamics, Pilgrim's entry under a licensed flag is a signal that the value-added frozen segment's brand war is intensifying.
