Portuguese Delegation Eyes U.S. Distribution at NOWFE

Portuguese agri-food producers from the Centro and Alentejo regions are heading to New Orleans this week to court importers, distributors, and buyers at the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience (NOWFE)—one of the country's longest-running culinary festivals.

The delegation, coordinated through the Taste & Feel Portugal 2.0 project by InovCluster and NERE (Évora Region Business Center), will focus on products bearing Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), and DOC certifications: wines, olive oils, cheeses, and cured meats.

Festival Draws 7,000-8,000 Visitors

NOWFE, running June 10-14, annually attracts 7,000 to 8,000 attendees, 175 wineries, and features over 1,000 wine labels—making it a significant platform for international suppliers seeking North American retail and foodservice placement.

Two High-Profile Activations Planned

The Portuguese producers will anchor their presence with two events:

June 12 at 3:00 PM — A live cooking demonstration at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum led by renowned local chef Dee LaVigne. According to the delegation, "Chef LaVigne will reinvent classic American recipes, combining them with traditional Portuguese ingredients to create a unique fusion of flavors."

June 13 at 2:30 PM — A dedicated promotional showcase at the Grand Tasting, offering industry professionals direct sampling and discovery opportunities.

Strategic Market Push

The Portuguese delegation aims to "establish strategic contacts with local importers, distributors, and buyers, identifying new business opportunities and affirming the 'Portugal' brand as a trusted reference of quality and tradition in the North American market."

The Taste & Feel Portugal 2.0 project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the COMPETE 2030 - Innovation and Digital Transition Thematic Programme.

Why It Matters

For U.S. importers and distributors seeking certified European specialty foods, NOWFE provides direct access to producer delegations. Portugal's Centro and Alentejo regions—historically known for wine and olive oil production—represent a diversifying source of PDO/PGI products that appeal to retailers emphasizing provenance and regulatory compliance. The live demonstration tactic also signals producers' willingness to invest in experiential marketing to drive trial among hospitality buyers.
