The Product
Puori, a natural supplement company founded in 2009, is entering the minimalist protein segment with PW1 Unflavored, a grass-fed whey protein concentrate containing a single ingredient. The product delivers 24 grams of protein per serving, along with 12 grams of essential amino acids and 6 grams of branched-chain amino acids — including 2.7 grams of leucine. The whey is sourced from pasture-raised cows in New Zealand and is certified non-GMO and hormone-free.
PW1 Unflavored is available immediately through Puori's own e-commerce site and Amazon. The launch targets a consumer cohort that has grown increasingly skeptical of complex supplement formulations, a trend documented across the broader functional-food and supplement category.
The Category Problem
The timing reflects mounting regulatory and consumer scrutiny of the protein powder market. The Clean Label Project's Protein Powder Category Report — which assessed 160 products from 70 top-selling brands representing 83.0% of the U.S. market — found that nearly half of the powders tested exceeded California Proposition 65 safety limits for heavy metals. That finding has given clean-label incumbents a commercial opening, particularly among health-focused retailers and direct-to-consumer channels where label transparency is a primary purchase driver.
Puori's existing whey protein line was among the 16 products recognized in the report's "Clean 16" designation for exceptionally low contaminant levels. The company says it is the only supplement brand to hold the Clean Label Project Transparency Award, which recognizes batch-level testing and public disclosure of results. Every production run of PW1 Unflavored is third-party certified against more than 200 contaminants, including heavy metals, pesticides, and environmental toxins. Consumers can scan a QR code on the packaging to verify results for the specific batch in hand.
Strategic Positioning
"Consumers are reading labels more carefully than ever, and many are frustrated by how processed and complicated protein powders have become," said Oliver Amdrup-Chamby, founder and CEO of Puori. "PW1 Unflavored is the purest expression of that approach: one ingredient, no fillers, and no compromises."
The single-ingredient positioning represents a deliberate counter-move in a category where manufacturers have historically competed on flavor complexity, proprietary blends, and fortification. Operators across foodservice and specialty retail have tracked the same consumer preference shift toward clean-label formulations, a dynamic also reshaping adjacent protein and ingredient sourcing decisions at the manufacturing level. For supplement brands, the competitive calculus is changing: supply-chain transparency and third-party verification are increasingly table stakes rather than differentiators, and Puori is betting that batch-level public disclosure raises that bar further. The product's unflavored format also positions it as a versatile ingredient for foodservice operators and recipe developers working in protein-fortified applications, where neutral taste profiles command a premium.
