The New SKU

Purity Coffee, the Greenville, S.C.-based specialty roaster that positions its beans around health and contaminant testing, has added a dedicated espresso product to its direct-to-consumer lineup. The whole-bean ESPRESSO roast, priced at $30 per bag, went on sale October 2 exclusively through the brand's website.

The launch fills a gap the company says customers had been requesting for years. Rather than simply darkening an existing SKU, Purity engineered a medium roast profile that sits between its flagship FLOW medium roast and its EASE dark roast — a deliberate calibration aimed at softening natural acidity while building the body and extraction characteristics that espresso preparation demands. The result, the company says, carries tasting notes of cocoa and dried fruit with a silky finish suited to straight shots and milk-based drinks including lattes and cappuccinos.

Health-Forward Positioning

The product extends Purity's so-called Circular Health Coffee system — a supply-chain framework the company says connects regenerative soil practices, intentional sourcing, and precision roasting. All incoming harvests undergo third-party laboratory testing for mold, mycotoxins, and other contaminants before roasting, a practice the brand uses as a core differentiator against conventional specialty competitors. The beans carry USDA organic certification.

"We created ESPRESSO to deliver the rich, balanced experience people want from espresso while setting a higher standard for healthy coffee," said Andrew Salisbury, CEO and co-founder of Purity Coffee. "Every decision — from the soil to the final roast — can influence the quality and health potential of the coffee in your cup."

The health-and-wellness angle has become an increasingly crowded positioning in the broader specialty coffee market. Operators and retailers tracking the functional-beverage segment will note that consumer interest in "clean" and low-toxin coffee claims has grown alongside demand for premium at-home espresso equipment — a trend accelerated by the sustained popularity of semi-automatic and super-automatic home machines. Purity's direct-to-consumer model allows it to command premium price points without relying on grocery or foodservice channel margins, though the absence of retail distribution limits its addressable volume relative to shelf-placed competitors.

Market Timing

The rollout was timed to coincide with National Coffee Day on September 29, when Purity ran a 20% sitewide discount — a promotional mechanic common among DTC coffee brands seeking to convert trial during high-traffic awareness periods. The whole-bean format requires consumers to grind fresh, positioning ESPRESSO toward engaged home brewers using traditional or automatic espresso machines, moka pots, and similar equipment.

For trade buyers and category analysts, the launch signals that Purity is methodically building out its SKU architecture rather than broadening into foodservice or retail channels. The company's existing roster — anchored by FLOW and EASE — now has a dedicated espresso entry point, which could improve basket size and customer retention among subscribers. The specialty-coffee DTC segment has faced pressure from higher green-coffee input costs and shipping expense; whether a $30 price point sustains margin at scale will depend on sourcing and logistics discipline the company has not publicly quantified.
