The California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) has named 15 companies to its 8th annual Real California Milk Excelerator, the dairy industry's longest-running CPG accelerator program, as alumni of the initiative have collectively generated nearly $60 million in brand sales since the program launched in 2021.

This year's cohort — selected in partnership with innovation consultancy VentureFuel — is split across two structured tracks for the first time at this scale: an eight-brand Growth-Stage Excelerator and a seven-brand earlier-stage Incubator, each offering mentorship, programming, and stipends tailored to where companies sit on the commercialization curve.

The 2026 Cohort

The Growth-Stage track features brands spanning several of the hottest vectors in the dairy case. Leo Leo Gelato brings artisan cookie sandwiches made with Central Coast dairy; Secret Creamery offers super-premium ice cream built around East and Southeast Asian flavors with a four-strain probiotic blend; and Maazah markets Afghan yogurt dips positioned to move from the ethnic aisle into mainstream retail. Yah Yah Yah, a Denver-based brand, competes in the crowded ready-to-drink coffee segment with Middle Eastern-inspired clean-label lattes carrying 5 grams of prebiotic fiber. Tulsi Foods produces clean-label paneer using traditional methods, targeting both specialty and mainstream dairy retailers. Life Raft Treats, RoseBud Ice Cream, and Hartman Strawberry/Acai Protein Drink round out the eight-company growth cohort, addressing novelty, mess-free convenience, and high-protein formats respectively.

The earlier-stage Incubator class includes Yaza Foods, Freezcake Snacks, Teiny, Mac Squares, Kadak, Spun, and Monava. Their concepts span labneh, freeze-dried cheesecake, cottage cheese-based snacks, frozen mac and cheese, protein chai, cultured dairy ice cream, and a healthcare-worker-targeted RTD latte — a lineup that maps closely to the functionality, gut health, and convenience themes Innova Market Insights identified as the dominant forces shaping global dairy and dairy-alternatives innovation in 2026.

Prize Structure and Timeline

The program culminates in December at a pitch event in San Luis Obispo, California, where all eight Growth-Stage companies will present to a live judging panel. Four finalists will receive $30,000 each in marketing support, then compete over 12 months of tracked in-market performance for a $100,000 grand prize to be awarded in 2027. The same event will also announce the $100,000 winner from the 2025 Excelerator finalist class.

"After eight years, we're doubling down on commercialization, helping companies using the Real California Milk seal to scale their businesses, strengthen their path to market and navigate an increasingly challenging CPG environment," said Bob Carroll, Chief Executive Officer of the CMAB. Fred Schonenberg, Founder and CEO of VentureFuel, framed the 2026 program as a "Commercialization Engine for Value-Added Dairy Innovation," emphasizing measurable pathways to retail placement and sustained consumer demand.

The dual-track structure reflects a broader maturation in food and beverage accelerator design, where programs are increasingly segmenting cohorts by revenue stage rather than running uniform cohorts — a model that lets mentors deliver more targeted guidance on retail buyer negotiations, foodservice distribution, and investor readiness. For the California dairy supply chain, the Excelerator functions as a demand-creation vehicle: every brand in the program is required to use the Real California Milk seal, linking startup growth directly to milk procurement from the state's dairy farm families. Past graduates Petit Pot and Smearcase have become cited examples of how accelerator-backed brands can redefine niches within the broader dairy category, providing a commercialization blueprint that this year's 15 entrants will seek to replicate.
