The Launch

Reser's Fine Foods, the Beaverton, Ore.-based family-owned maker of refrigerated prepared foods, has introduced a three-SKU High Protein Deli Salad line now available in the deli sections of major grocery retailers nationwide. The new products — Chicken Salad (15 grams of protein per serving), Tuna Salad (12 grams), and Egg Salad (11 grams) — are formulated with a cottage cheese-based dressing that the company says delivers 25% more protein and 40% to 60% fewer calories than its traditional deli salads.

The Data Behind It

The launch is backed by a Pollfish survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers aged 16–29, conducted in September 2026, that Reser's commissioned to gauge Gen Z protein behavior. Half of respondents said they are eating more protein today than they were two years ago, while 95% said they want more variety in their protein sources. Eighty-seven percent indicated they would prefer high-protein versions of foods they already eat, and 63% said they are tired of eating the same protein foods repeatedly. Three out of four identified as "Team Protein" rather than "Team Carbs" — a framing that reflects the demographic's documented shift away from carbohydrate-forward snacking.

The data points underscore a broader structural opportunity in the refrigerated deli case. The category has historically skewed toward convenience and value, but the emergence of protein-forward consumer behavior — accelerated in part by wellness culture and GLP-1-related dietary discussions — is pushing manufacturers to reformulate legacy SKUs rather than build entirely new platforms. Reser's approach of retaining familiar formats (chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad) while upgrading the nutritional profile is a lower-risk path to shelf placement compared with introducing unfamiliar product types.

What's Next

"People are looking for easy ways to add protein into their day and want something more interesting than another protein shake or chicken breast," said Megan Torres, senior brand strategy manager for Reser's. The cottage cheese base, she noted, creates the creamy texture consumers expect from deli salads while boosting the nutritional profile — a technical bridge that has become increasingly common in dairy-adjacent reformulations across the foodservice and retail grocery sectors.

The High Protein line joins Reser's existing refrigerated portfolio, which includes Deviled Egg Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, and Cole Slaw under the Reser's American Classics banner, alongside the Main St Bistro, Stonemill Kitchens, and Don Pancho brands. With more than 5,000 employees and 14 manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Mexico, the company has the production infrastructure to scale the line if retail velocity warrants broader distribution.

For operators and grocery buyers, the launch signals that the premium-protein trend is now migrating into the everyday deli set — a category that has seen growing retailer investment in fresh prepared foods as a traffic driver. The move also reflects how consumer demand for functional ingredients is reshaping product development timelines across the refrigerated aisle, with manufacturers increasingly commissioning proprietary survey data to validate category entry rather than relying solely on syndicated market research.
