The Numbers
Restaurant Brands International (NYSE/TSX: QSR) posted consolidated system-wide sales of $12.97 billion in the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, a 6.2% increase on a constant-currency basis from $12.28 billion a year earlier. Total reported revenues rose to $2.53 billion from $2.45 billion, while Adjusted Operating Income (AOI) advanced to $737 million from $702 million — a nominal gain of 5.0% and an organic gain of 6.7% after stripping out foreign-exchange effects and the company-owned Restaurant Holdings segment. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $1.10, up 6.9% from $1.03, while GAAP diluted EPS from continuing operations jumped to $1.54 from $0.96, lifted in part by a discrete tax benefit tied to intra-group reorganizations. Net leverage tightened to 4.0x from 4.4x a year ago.
Brand Performance
Burger King US was the quarter's standout. Comparable sales for the domestic franchise segment rose 8.4%, accelerating sharply from 3.2% in the prior-year period, and segment system-wide sales grew 7.6% to $3.18 billion. RBI attributed the gain directly to the ongoing "Reclaim the Flame" revitalisation plan, which has now deployed $198 million of the up to $550 million budgeted for restaurant remodels, relocations, technology upgrades, and kitchen improvements through year-end 2028. Burger King US segment AOI climbed to $136 million from $123 million. The International segment also performed strongly, with system-wide sales growth of 9.0% on a constant-currency basis to $5.89 billion and comparable sales of 3.9%; segment AOI reached $205 million versus $189 million. The resumption of royalty revenues from the Burger King China joint venture — established in January 2026 after CPE invested $350 million of primary capital — contributed to the INTL revenue gain. Tim Hortons posted comparable sales growth of 1.5%, a deceleration from 4.2% in Q3 2025 that reflects tougher prior-year comparisons; its segment AOI rose to $317 million from $304 million, aided by tariff refunds. Popeyes US remained a pressure point, with comparable sales declining 2.2% and segment AOI falling to $58 million from $63 million as advertising fund contributions shrank. Firehouse Subs continued to expand, with net restaurant growth of 7.8% and system-wide sales up 8.3% to $360 million.
Capital Allocation and Outlook
RBI returned $1.3 billion to shareholders in the first nine months of 2026 through dividends and share repurchases. For Q3 alone, the company bought back 817,041 common shares for $61 million and 2,784,549 Class B exchangeable limited partnership units for $214 million, leaving $768 million under the existing $1.0 billion repurchase authorization. The board declared a Q4 dividend of $0.65 per common share and partnership exchangeable unit, payable January 5, 2027. Free cash flow for the trailing twelve months ended September 30, 2026 reached $1.58 billion. Management reaffirmed full-year guidance for 8% organic AOI growth and maintained its long-term algorithm of 3%-plus comparable sales and 8%-plus organic AOI growth on average from 2024 to 2028, with net restaurant growth expected to reach 5%-plus toward the end of the algorithm period. Segment general and administrative expenses excluding Restaurant Holdings are projected at $600 million to $620 million for the year, with total capital expenditures and cash inducements of approximately $400 million.
The divergence between Burger King's domestic recovery and Popeyes' continued same-store softness underlines the brand-by-brand execution risk facing large quick-service restaurant franchisors. For franchisees and foodservice operators tracking consumer spending patterns, RBI's aggregate comparable-sales read of 3.8% across its portfolio offers a useful barometer of value-seeking traffic in the fast-food segment.
