The Seasonal Push

Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, the self-described largest Italian Ice concept in the world with more than 600 locations, is adding four limited-time items to its menu beginning this week, anchoring the fall promotional window around Pumpkin and Apple Butter flavor platforms. The move follows a pattern common across the quick-service frozen-treat segment, where seasonal limited-time offers drive incremental traffic and app-membership conversion during shoulder periods between summer peaks and the holiday quarter.

The Four New Items

The fall lineup spans two beverage and two concrete-style formats. On the Pumpkin side, the chain is introducing a Pumpkin Frozen Coffee—its signature blended coffee base combined with pumpkin crème and finished with whipped cream—and a Pumpkin Pie Concrete, a frozen custard blend incorporating pumpkin crème and vanilla wafers. The Apple Butter entries mirror that structure: an Apple Butter Milkshake built on vanilla frozen custard with whipped cream and cherry, and an Apple Butter Concrete blending vanilla custard with apple butter flavor, vanilla wafers, and apple pie topping. All four are positioned as returning fan favorites rather than entirely new product development, reducing both supply-chain risk and consumer education costs for franchise operators.

Loyalty and Unit Economics

The seasonal rollout is paired with a loyalty-acquisition push through the Rita's Ice app, available on iOS and Android. New members receive one free small item upon signing up and completing a first purchase—a standard trial-conversion mechanic that chains in the frozen-dessert and QSR categories have increasingly tied to LTO windows to maximize the return on promotional spend. For franchisees operating across Rita's 600-plus-unit footprint, the combination of a low-cost returning SKU and a loyalty driver provides a measurable mechanism to lift average ticket and repeat visit frequency during what is historically a traffic-softening period.

"For so many of our guests, the first taste of pumpkin is when fall officially begins," said Carmela Hughley, Senior Vice President of Marketing Insights & Innovation at Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard. "There's a reason pumpkin season has become a celebration of its own, and at Rita's, we're all in."

The pumpkin-flavor LTO cycle has become a broadly adopted commercial strategy across the foodservice industry, with operators from coffeehouse chains to fast-casual brands competing for share of the seasonal consumer spend window that typically runs from late August through late October. Rita's entry into that window with four distinct SKUs—rather than a single hero product—signals an effort to capture multiple daypart and format occasions simultaneously, a strategy consistent with franchised QSR operators seeking to maximize throughput without expanding kitchen complexity. The chain's Italian Ice is made fresh daily on-site from a rotating selection of more than 80 flavors, giving individual locations flexibility within a standardized promotional framework.
