Rubbermaid's Brilliance food storage line has incorporated recycled-content plastic for the first time, with the brand adding containers made using Tritan Renew from Eastman — a copolyester carrying certified recycled content derived from Eastman's molecular recycling technology. The updated products entered retail distribution in April 2026.
The move represents a material evolution for a line that Newell Brands (NASDAQ: NWL) has positioned at the premium end of the food storage category since 2016. Rubbermaid, a Newell Brands property, has not disclosed the retail price differential, unit volumes, or SKU count affected by the material change, but confirmed the new containers span rectangular and round food storage formats as well as pantry dry-goods containers.
The Material Shift
Tritan Renew is produced using Eastman's molecular recycling process, which the Kingsport, Tennessee-based specialty materials company — reporting approximately $8.8 billion in 2025 revenues — has been commercializing across consumer and foodservice applications. The copolyester retains the clarity, stain resistance, odor resistance, and shatter resistance associated with the standard Tritan formulation, along with Brilliance's patented leakproof, microwave-safe lid system. A mass balance accounting methodology is used to allocate recycled material to each unit, meaning actual recycled content per individual container may vary.
For food storage manufacturers and retailers, the adoption signals growing pressure to integrate post-consumer or chemically recycled materials into food-contact-safe products — a technically demanding segment where regulatory compliance and performance consistency constrain material substitutions more sharply than in non-food categories. Rubbermaid's ability to maintain its existing Brilliance product architecture while swapping in Tritan Renew, without redesigning lids or containers, is notable from a supply-chain standpoint and lowers the barrier for similar transitions across the broader food storage and meal prep equipment segment.
Retail and Competitive Context
"By bringing Tritan Renew into Rubbermaid Brilliance products, we're able to combine performance, clarity and durability with thoughtful material innovation," said Waylon Good, vice president of brand management for Rubbermaid food storage products. The Brilliance range competes directly with premium food storage offerings from Pyrex, OXO, and private-label lines at major grocery and mass-market retailers.
The partnership between Newell Brands and Eastman extends an existing relationship: Brilliance originally launched with standard Tritan copolyester a decade ago, giving Eastman an established integration point from which to introduce its recycled-content variant. For Eastman, landing Rubbermaid as a Tritan Renew reference customer in the food storage category adds commercial validation at retail scale, potentially supporting further licensing conversations with competing housewares brands.
The sustainability-driven reformulation trend in foodservice-adjacent housewares has accelerated since 2023, as major retailers have pressed suppliers for measurable recycled-content commitments ahead of anticipated state-level packaging mandates. Rubbermaid's move positions Newell Brands ahead of several housewares peers that have announced recycled-content intentions without yet launching compliant products at mass retail.
