Two Products, Two Segments
Rudi's Bakery, the Boulder, Colorado-based organic and gluten-free bread maker, is pushing into two distinct growth categories simultaneously: frozen handheld snacks and high-protein packaged bread. The brand announced on October 13, 2026 the launch of Rudi's Gluten Free Sandos — a crustless pocket PB&J made with Justin's Classic Peanut Butter — and Rudi's Gluten Free Daily Power Protein Bread, available in White and Sourdough. Both products carry certified gluten-free status and are entering national retail distribution immediately.
The Sandos line, sold in 4-count frozen cartons in Peanut Butter & Grape and Peanut Butter & Strawberry varieties, is positioned as the first nationally available pre-made, gluten-free crustless peanut butter and fruit spread pocket sandwich. The product is now stocked in the freezer aisle at Whole Foods Market, Kroger, and Thrive Market. The format targets lunchbox and snack occasions — channels where gluten-free consumers have historically had few convenient, branded alternatives.
The Numbers Behind Daily Power
The Daily Power Protein Bread addresses a persistent nutritional gap in the gluten-free bread segment. Each serving delivers 10 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber — macronutrient levels that are atypical for gluten-free loaves, which tend to rely on rice flour or tapioca starch bases that offer limited nutritional density. The 18-ounce loaves are now available at Sprouts Farmers Market nationally, with Kroger distribution set to begin in November 2026.
Approximately 3.1 million Americans follow a gluten-free diet, according to industry data, and the segment has expanded well beyond the celiac community into broader health-conscious consumer cohorts. Retailers including Whole Foods, Kroger, Sprouts, and Thrive Market have all deepened their gluten-free shelf allocations in recent years, reflecting sustained shopper demand. Rudi's dual-channel strategy — covering both frozen and ambient bakery — allows it to compete across multiple store departments in a single commercial push.
Retail Footprint and Brand Context
Founded in 1976, Rudi's has built its distribution network primarily through natural and conventional grocery chains. The Justin's co-branding on the Sandos line brings a recognizable better-for-you peanut butter brand into the partnership and may broaden trial among Justin's existing customer base. The Sandos formulation uses real fruit spread rather than jam or jelly and excludes high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors or colors — attributes increasingly relevant to premium retail buyers making shelf decisions.
"Gluten-free consumers have always had to compromise on taste and nutrition with bread," said Jane Miller, Chief Executive Officer of Rudi's Bakery. "We're delivering products that help consumers enjoy more possibilities without compromise."
The launches reflect a broader competitive dynamic in the gluten-free bakery segment, where brands are under pressure to close the protein and texture gap relative to conventional bread. For operators and retail buyers evaluating the gluten-free and better-for-you bakery category, Rudi's simultaneous entry into frozen handheld and high-protein ambient bread represents a meaningful expansion of its addressable market. Industry observers tracking retail innovation in the packaged bread aisle will note that protein fortification has become a primary differentiator as legacy SKUs face growing private-label competition.
