Sargento, the family-owned natural cheese company with $1.7 billion in net sales, has acquired La Terra Fina, a maker of premium dairy-based dips, spreads and quiches, the companies confirmed Oct. 1. The deal adds approximately 250 employees to Sargento and opens a new front for the Plymouth, Wis. business: the grocery and club deli aisle, a channel the company had not previously occupied. Financial terms were not disclosed by either privately held entity.
Strategic Rationale
The acquisition restructures Sargento's operating model into three distinct business units — Consumer Products, Food Service & Ingredients, and a newly created Deli Business Unit — each led by a dedicated general manager. For Sargento, which built its identity around pre-packaged sliced and shredded natural cheeses, the deli department represents a logical adjacency: a premium, high-engagement fixture where dairy-forward brands can command strong margins and loyal shoppers. La Terra Fina, founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983 and a private affiliate of Catamount Management Corporation since 2015, brings established retail and club-channel distribution alongside an entrenched position in refrigerated dips and quiches. The combination gives Sargento a second branded growth platform beyond its core cheese business, where it already claims the No. 1 branded natural cheese position in the United States.
Leadership Reshuffled
Erin Price, who previously served as General Manager of Consumer Products, Food Service & Ingredients and Vice President of Strategic Planning, has been named General Manager of the new Deli Business Unit. She will oversee La Terra Fina's integration into Sargento's three-year rolling strategic plan, with La Terra Fina President and CEO Stephen Cottrell and his leadership team reporting to her. Jeremy Schellin, former General Manager of Food Service & Ingredients, has been promoted to General Manager of Consumer Products — the unit responsible for Sargento's branded cheese slices, shreds, chunks and snacks across grocery and retail. Under Schellin's prior stewardship, the Food Service & Ingredients division crossed $500 million in net sales for the first time in its 40-year history. Joy Judski has been appointed Interim General Manager of Food Service & Ingredients while Sargento conducts a permanent search; she retains her FSI Sales responsibilities during the transition and brings more than 20 years of experience in trade strategy and customer planning.
What's Next
The deal signals an accelerating appetite among legacy dairy processors to diversify beyond core cheese into premium refrigerated categories, as consumer trends in specialty deli continue to outpace centre-store packaged goods. Sargento's move also underscores the strategic value of the club and grocery deli perimeter — a fixture that has attracted significant investment from branded manufacturers seeking higher-velocity, differentiated placements. For operators and retail buyers, the combination raises the prospect of deeper category management partnerships, given Sargento's history of retailer collaboration and La Terra Fina's existing club-channel presence. Louie Gentine, third-generation Chairman and CEO of Sargento, framed the deal as consistent with the company's long-standing innovation mandate. "Entering the Deli is an exciting opportunity for the Sargento Family, that expands our capabilities, builds on the strength of the La Terra Fina brand and brings new consumers to Sargento," Gentine said. Investors and trade partners tracking M&A activity across dairy and specialty food will note that this transaction consolidates two privately held, family-aligned businesses under a single roof — an increasingly common structure as founders seek long-term stewardship without a public-market exit. Sargento's balance sheet context — $1.7 billion in net sales across more than 2,500 employees — suggests capacity to invest in La Terra Fina's brand and distribution without the margin pressure a debt-heavy deal would impose.
