Torchy's Tacos has restored Nookies to its permanent menu after a hiatus of more than two years, responding to what the Austin-based fast-casual chain describes as thousands of requests through social media, guest emails and reviews. The relaunch marks a formulation update: the fried chocolate chip cookie dough bites now carry a cinnamon-sugar finish that was absent from the original version, first introduced under the name Lil' Nookies in 2008.

Menu Momentum

The dessert revival is one of several menu moves Torchy's has executed this year as it approaches its 20th anniversary. Earlier in 2026, the chain added nachos — another long-requested item — for the first time in its history. The company also recently introduced Taco Two-Step, a limited-time combo deal running through November 10 designed to address guest demand for value-oriented meal bundles, a format gaining traction across the fast-casual segment as operators navigate consumer sensitivity to menu pricing.

November's limited-time additions extend the promotional calendar further. The Rebel Yell Taco — grilled shrimp, crispy bacon, cabbage slaw, jack cheese, guajillo fried onions, smoky BBQ sauce and chipotle ranch on a flour tortilla — leads the taco rotation, while a Pineapple Margarita made with tequila, Grand Marnier, pineapple puree and lime juice anchors the drink program.

Loyalty Lever

Torchy's used the Nookies relaunch to activate its loyalty program, giving rewards members exclusive early access through a secret menu entry one week before the broader release. The tactic reflects a wider industry pattern in which fast-casual operators deploy limited early-access windows to accelerate loyalty enrollment and deepen engagement among existing members. Comparable strategies have been deployed across the restaurant loyalty landscape by chains seeking to convert occasional visitors into high-frequency guests.

Chief Executive Officer Paul Macaluso framed the return as emblematic of the chain's broader menu philosophy. "The intersection of culinary creativity, craveable flavors and listening to our guests continues to shape our menu innovation," Macaluso said, noting that the Nookies relaunch exemplifies how Torchy's approaches both new introductions and the revival of existing fan favorites.

Torchy's operates nearly 120 restaurants across the United States, having grown from a single food trailer in Austin in 2006. The chain, known for scratch-made ingredients and a rotating taco calendar, has built a loyal consumer base — branded internally as "Taco Junkies" — that the company increasingly treats as a direct feedback channel for menu development. That feedback loop, which contributed to both the nachos launch and the Nookies return, is becoming a more deliberate part of the brand's product pipeline as it scales.
