Triumph Higher Education Group completed its acquisition of the Culinary Institute of Barcelona (CIB) on July 17, 2026, adding a European campus to a portfolio that already includes Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts — the largest culinary school brand in the United States by student population — and Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver, British Columbia. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Network Now

The combined organisation will enrol more than 8,000 students annually, draw on an alumni base exceeding 25,000 and employ more than 150 faculty and chef instructors across North America and Europe. CIB, founded in 2017, has trained more than 1,300 students from more than 100 nationalities through professional diploma and specialisation programmes spanning haute cuisine, pastry arts, kitchen leadership and restaurant management. The school maintains internship partnerships with more than 200 restaurants internationally and was nominated for Europe's Best Culinary Training Institution at the World Culinary Awards in both 2025 and 2026.

For Triumph, the deal advances a stated strategy of expanding career-focused programmes in high-demand sectors — culinary arts, hospitality and food entrepreneurship — while creating cross-border student pathways. New offerings will include study-abroad experiences in Spain, expanded online learning and shared access to a global faculty network. CIB will continue operating from its Barcelona campus with no disruption to current students or programmes.

Strategic Rationale

"CIB's approach to culinary education, built on creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, is a natural fit with the Triumph family and with Escoffier's blend of professional culinary arts and contemporary business training," said Jack Larson, chairman, CEO and president of Triumph Higher Education Group. Larson framed the acquisition as an extension of Escoffier's founding ethos, noting that Auguste Escoffier himself transformed professional kitchen culture and that CIB carries a parallel spirit of reimagining culinary education.

Josep Gala Micó, co-founder and president of CIB, said joining Triumph gives the school's students and alumni access to expanded employer networks and career pathways reaching across North America, while preserving CIB's methodology and Barcelona identity. A significant majority of CIB alumni go on to start their own food businesses — a profile that aligns with Escoffier's emphasis on food entrepreneurship and the broader operator trend toward culinary-business hybrids.

Industry Context

The acquisition reflects consolidation pressure across the private culinary-education sector, where institutions are competing on global reach, employer partnerships and flexible delivery formats as foodservice and hospitality labour markets remain tight. Barcelona's status as a leading culinary destination and Spain's expanding gastronomy and culinary-tourism sectors add geographic relevance: the city provides a pipeline of industry relationships and internship placements that smaller, single-campus schools cannot easily replicate.

Triumph's broader portfolio also includes Gecko Hospitality, a hospitality recruitment firm, and Auguste Escoffier Global Solutions, positioning the group to serve employers as well as students across the talent pipeline that links culinary training to foodservice operations. The CIB deal reinforces that vertical integration play at the international level.
