The Expansion

United Airlines has lowered the mileage threshold for its United Economy fresh food preorder program from flights over 1,190 miles to flights over 900 miles across North America and the Caribbean, adding 420 eligible flights per day and extending access to up to 65,000 additional customers daily. The change, effective immediately, brings hub-to-hub routes — including Chicago–Houston, Denver–San Francisco, and Houston–Washington D.C. — into the program for the first time.

What's on the Menu

Passengers on newly eligible routes can preorder from a rotating monthly menu of fresh items — currently including a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago patty melt developed by chef Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle — alongside United's existing lineup of snackboxes. Orders open five days before departure and close 24 hours prior to wheels-up, placed through the United mobile app or united.com. App users receive a push notification when the preorder window opens for their specific flight.

The airline's onboard fresh food offering, branded Bistro on Board, sits at the intersection of two durable inflight foodservice trends: consumer demand for restaurant-quality options at altitude and the operational preference for preordered, pre-portioned inventory that reduces galley waste and simplifies catering logistics. For airline catering suppliers and contracted food manufacturers, the expanded route eligibility represents a direct increase in production volume without requiring new menu development.

Broader Fleet Investment

The meal preorder expansion is part of a broader cabin investment cycle at United. Beginning November 1, the carrier is refreshing its three signature snackbox lines — Tapas, Takeout, and Recline — with updated selections, and it continues to rotate seasonal food and beverage offerings across its onboard menu. A limited-edition Wishes snackbox, created in collaboration with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, is also part of the current lineup.

On the technology side, United is rolling out Starlink satellite Wi-Fi across its fleet — now live on all two-cabin regional aircraft and more than 280 mainline planes, with full-fleet completion targeted for 2027. The airline is separately installing seatback screens across up to 1,000 aircraft by end-2027 and introducing new planes fitted with 27-inch, 4K OLED screens. David Kinzelman, United's Chief Customer Officer, framed the preorder expansion as part of the same investment thesis: delivering incremental value in Economy across connectivity, entertainment, and food. For foodservice operators and airline catering partners, the combination of wider digital ordering and a larger eligible passenger base signals continued growth in the preordered inflight meal segment — a channel that sidesteps the limitations of traditional buy-on-board inventory management. Analysts covering consumer packaged goods and food manufacturing will note the program's chef-branded component as evidence that airlines are deepening relationships with named culinary talent to drive menu differentiation.
