Tennessee ingredient-technology company Volunteer Botanicals has launched Inner Wild, a four-SKU functional beverage line that pairs mineral-rich spring water with adaptogens, mushrooms, vitamins and hemp-derived cannabinoids — positioning the brand squarely inside the fastest-growing pocket of the non-alcoholic beverage market.

The products are available online and in liquor and spirits retail accounts across Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia, giving the brand an immediate five-state brick-and-mortar footprint at launch.

The Market Backdrop

The timing is deliberate. U.S. alcohol consumption has been declining steadily, with Gallup data showing drinking rates at new lows as wellness-focused lifestyles gain ground. Analysts project the domestic functional beverage segment will approach $100 million over the next decade, driven by consumer appetite for ingredients such as adaptogens, medicinal mushrooms, botanicals and hemp-derived cannabinoids — precisely the stack Inner Wild is built around.

"Consumers are not simply looking for another beverage. They're looking for products that fit how they want to live," said Jason Pickle, president of Volunteer Botanicals. "People want sustained energy without the crash, ways to relax without alcohol, and functional ingredients they recognize and trust."

The shift is reshaping shelf strategy across the non-alcoholic beverage and functional food and beverage categories, with breweries, specialty retailers and mainstream grocery operators alike expanding space for botanical formulations as traditional alcohol and sugary soft-drink volumes soften.

Product Architecture

All four Inner Wild SKUs use water sourced from Blue Spring Living Water as their base, a mineral spring the company says provides a premium sensory foundation. Volunteer Botanicals' proprietary Rapidose technology converts botanical extracts into water-compatible microemulsions, which the company says improves bioavailability — a critical differentiator in a category where efficacy claims are increasingly scrutinized by label-conscious shoppers.

The lineup is structured around occasion-based use cases: Luminous Lion targets cognitive energy through lion's mane, cordyceps and natural caffeine; Frisky Fox combines saffron, ashwagandha and nitric oxide-supporting botanicals for mood and performance; Opulent Owl is a calming blend of kava, blue lotus and L-theanine; and Blissful Bear is formulated with hemp-derived THC and CBG for relaxation — a SKU that will require age-gated retail placement and adds complexity to any future national distribution effort.

Distribution and Outlook

The regional retail strategy — focused on liquor and spirits stores rather than mainstream grocery — reflects both the THC-inclusive SKU's regulatory constraints and a deliberate move to reach consumers already browsing alcohol alternatives in a trade-up mindset. Whether the brand extends into natural grocery, convenience or on-premise foodservice channels will likely determine its scale trajectory.

Pickle signaled an intent to grow with consumer behavior rather than ahead of it. "People increasingly expect beverages to do something beyond quench thirst — and they are looking at labels for ingredient information like never before," he said. "We believe that is where the industry is headed, with consumers leading the way." For operators and retail buyers monitoring the alcohol-alternative and functional-beverage shelf, Inner Wild's five-state launch represents a data point worth tracking as the category continues to consolidate around ingredient credibility and occasion-based positioning.
